Pocahontas resident Frank Ned ved is hospitalized in Fort Dodge after his left hand was nearly severed when he reached into a threshing machine blower to clean the fan, assuming it had stopped. The incident highlights dangers of unguarded farm equipment and the need for maintenance.
In Cedar Rapids Marvin Null, 16, was shot in the right leg during an attempted escape from Detectives Albert Wilson and Jim Bailey. He was wanted for questioning in burglaries at houseboats near Ellis Park and taken to a hospital. Police say he was parolee from Eldora boy's training school.
Richard Kaveny, 14, remains in critical condition with a broken neck and paralysis from the waist down after diving from a 12 foot tower during a tag game at a Fort Dodge pool. Friends pulled him from the water and his companions helped in the rescue.

Harold Beatty, 30, was electrocuted after contacting a fallen live power wire in Oskaloosa. Alsop residence, likely touched the wire while dumping grass.
An experimental laboratory in Fort Dodge disclosed theft of several guinea pigs and rabbits inoculated with deadly diseases such as rabies meningitis and tuberculosis. Officials warned against eating or handling the animals and urged returning or killing them.

Pearl Olson of Eagle Grove becomes the counties new maternity nurse taking over from Ruby Brouillette. Olson trained at Lincoln hospital Hampton and has public health work at the University of Minnesota and four months with Des Moines visiting nurses. She joins Ila Hiltunen and Thelma Luther on the county health unit staff. Brouillette leaves for Omaha Nebraska to join the visiting nurses association.
Paris reports Pearl White, famed actress in the Perils of Pauline serials, has died in Paris. The move star, long associated with silent film adventures, passed away today leaving behind a notable career in early cinema thrills.
The Benson school reunion is scheduled for August 10. Organizers led by R K Ferguson invite all former students and teachers to attend. A noon basket dinner will be followed by old time Friday activities including ginging recitations and a spelling contest. If weather allows, a game of town ball may close the event.
Des Moines Aug 4 Four state democratic justices of the Iowa supreme court were renominated by acclamation by about 500 delegates at the state democratic judicial convention today.
A bouquet of gladioli on the Journal office counter was a gift from R. C. Ferguson of West Chester. The blooms range from deep red to pink and white.
All incumbent officers were reelected at the annual library board meeting held Tuesday evening at the library. The officers are Rev. Arthur Atack as president, Helen Wilson as vice president, and Mrs A Anderson as secretary. The board discussed library matters and reported the library in fine condition and well managed.
