Du buque residents hear that the Cole Brothers circus canceled its Iowa engagement after closing in Bloomington Wisconsin and shipping to winter quarters.
In Oskaloosa Maurice Hull of Tainter was fined five dollars plus costs for permitting his 16-year-old sister to drive his car without a license after she lost control and went into a ditch last month.
Betty Claire Slee age 16 of Davenport died after plunging from a ladder through a second floor window at Immaculate Conception Academy. She bled from severed jugular veins from the broken glass while washing windows to earn tuition. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Slee.
Centerville plans lightening relief load with a subsistence farm project. A local corporation would handle sale of small farms to relief clients with farm experience, funded by federal aid from the Farm Security Administration. ARNOLDS PARK reports diabetes death rate leading the nation. Dr. D W Paul cites luxury diets and high fat intake as factors. Iowa lags in public mental health care per Dr. Felix Hennessy.
Sheriff James L. O Malley aged 37 of Webster City died after a Hamilton County sheriff car crashed into a concrete bridge. Police believe he fell asleep at the wheel, sending the car across the road and wrecking it. The left front wheel pushed through the floorboard and a portion of the bridge abutment broke off and toppled into the creek below.
Mrs. Clea Wogensen, 46, was electrocuted in Des Moines while handling a fan with wet hands and shoes. Coroner Dr. A E Shaw said a short circuit near water pipes sent full voltage through her body after contact with the device. Frank E Suddoth, city electrical department inspector, led the investigation.
A 9% pound girl named Laura Luella Nitcher was born on a local farm with the liver small intestine and colon in a transparent sac outside the abdomen. Doctors at Mercy Hospital Waverly operated two and a half hours after birth to return the organs and restore normal anatomy.
Mrs. Gittys Nash, 45, was found shot to death and stabbed with her son Burton, 14, also slain in their Davenport home in an exclusive district. A. Nash, vice president of United Power & Light Co., discovered the bodies on his return from Lincoln, Nebraska. Dr. W. Fley, Scott county coroner, termed the scene a mystery murder rather than suicide.
Newton Iowa August fifth 1945 The Maytag washing machine plant resumes full operation with about 1400 workers back at their posts every department active near normal output National Guardsmen patrol the plant area armed with tear gas guns and machine guns while infantrymen guard streets traffic limited near the factory workers walk in streets to reach entrances.

Des Moines Aug 1 Coroner A E Shaw said there will be no inquest into the deaths of E V McAvoy 52 conductor and P C Furtong 55 brakeman killed when the caboose they rode left the rails, uncoupled from the train and rolled down an embankment near here. McAvoy from Silvis Illinois and Furtong from Moline Illinois.

Wart Young, 26, chief suspect in the killing of Betty Sehnaidt, 17, of Sioux Falls, was critically wounded by police in Hot Springs after resisting arrest at a hotel room. He had posted a $6,000 reward and a nationwide search covered six states. The victim was found bound with a towel in a weed patch near Sioux Falls.
Judge James P. Gaffney of Williamsburg was nominated at the district Democratic convention held here on July 21 to sue.
A 350 pound bear that escaped its cage at Highland Park zoo was shot and killed by zoo superintendent Arnold J. Schauman as it charged him. Schauman fired four shots as the animal stood eight feet tall on its hind legs near a tunnel by a reservoir.
Glenwood, Iowa, Aug 4 The state's 1988 highway death toll climbs to 224 with the killing of William Powles 73 a retired farmer of Glenwood by a car driven by L W Johnson Red Oak farmer on highway 275 An inquest is scheduled into the death.
Mrs William Ruebsam aged 77 died at 6 30 this morning at 409 West Madison after an illness begun May 10. Funeral at St James Catholic church at 9 Monday with burial in Elm Grove. Rosary Sunday 8 PM at home. Born Adelheid Schmitt in Frankfort Germany Sept 28 1860 she married William Ruebsam Jan 19 1883 in Washington Illinois. Surviving daughters Mrs Clyde Fish Mrs Fred Mitchell and Mrs Claude McCoy of Crawfordsville. One daughter Mrs Joe Quinn predeceased her.
