Hereford champions dominate Washington County fair beef show

John Schneider's Hereford 1135 lb claimed grand champion market beef at the 4H and FFA Fair. Eric Graber's 1165 lb Hereford took reserve. Daylong judging produced multiple champions in swine, rabbits, ponies, and horse classes with crowds and a porkburger dinner kickoff and a parade of champions planned for evening.

Schwengel wins in 44th district as primary shocks Iowa county races

Schwengel defeats incumbent Richard Stephens in Jefferson County and wins by a large margin in Van Buren to secure the Republican nomination for state senator from the 44th district. He will face Norbert J. Flanders after Flanders beat William Fullerton III. Washington County Sheriff Don Robertson and County Attorney John Baldrige win nominations in tight races. Unopposed slates win several county positions as rain dampens turnout.

Franzenburg, Neu win Iowa primary races in Des Moines

Ames Democrat Paul Franzenburg defeated John Tapscott for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and will face Gov. Robert D. Ray in November. Republican Arthur Neu defeated William Harbor for lieutenant governor, joining Ray on the GOP ticket. Other primary results included Sen. Jack Miller winning big in the GOP, Lounsberry beating Stadiman for agriculture nomination, Mezvinsky and Taylor advancing in congressional races, and Ray seeking a third term.

Kalona boy dies in highway 22 bicycle collision

Ten year old Daniel Lynn Yoder of rural Kalona died after a truck bicycle crash on highway 22 about one mile west of Kalona. Washington County sheriff's officers said he appeared to cut across the road in front of an eastbound truck driven by Mary Miller of rural Kalona. The accident occurred at 9 35 a m. The Yoder boy died on arrival at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
