City council approves budget and begins civic talks
Washington city council met Monday night approving the budget after a public hearing. A contract with Green Engineering of Cedar Rapids was signed for preliminary data on a proposed city hall replacement. Bids for a new police car were opened but action delayed. Plans for a public hearing on mobile home ordinance were outlined. Condemnation talks were authorized for Fourth Avenue land. The University of Iowa health center was named a Specialized Center of Research by the National Heart and Lung Institute with a five year grant of about 3.5 million dollars to study artery and heart disease. The center will focus on fatty substances in blood and tissues related to vascular disease. The program aims to improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. first year funding totals 707,749 dollars.

McEldoon brothers to transfer after Iowa fire
Mark and Todd McEldoon of Brighton are to be moved from University Hospitals Iowa City to the Shrine Institute burn center in Galveston Texas this week after a machine shop fire near Lake Darling State Park injured them Friday. Bruce Vey, M D, of the University of Iowa College of Medicine was named dean of the University of Pacific Graduate School of Medical Science. Spivey, Iowa native, was associate professor in Ophthalmology there. Everett, Wash. Larry Beaulieu began a free throw spree, ending with a world record 37 000 shots, then quit. He wore out rebounders and switched to underhand throws as his hands protested.
