Margaret Toillion five daughter of Mr and Mrs Harlan Toillion of near Eagle Grove was in serious condition at Lutheran hospital with infection from a rat bite. She was bitten after picking up a wounded rat she thought the family dog had killed.
Clyde Lt. Buck Starbeck, football coach at Iowa State Teachers College, sped toward a siren he heard but could not see the fire engine. The siren was from a motorcycle policeman after him and he faces charges of driving 45 miles an hour in a 25 mile zone in police court this morning.
A rat plague is planned to cause farm depredations from stored corn to stealing chickens. At the Walter Plate jem near Wright they raid gardens eating green beans peas and now dig into the ground to eat carrots.
Creston merchants questioned a man who gave the name C A Craig after he arrived over the weekend. He posed as a paint company salesman, rented a house, opened a bank account with counterfeit Columbus checks, and registered at two hotels. By Tuesday he fled town with $65, a borrowed typewriter, new shoes, two pairs of pants, drug sundries, and various checks.
Pensioners who cashed unsigned state pension checks in Taylor County must expect checks to be signed upon return to the state department of social welfare. The comptroller’s office advised banks to clear the 481 affected checks, noting the issue arose from an automated printing process and a few checks were missed.
The twenty first annual Iowa School for Wild Life Protection opening was marred when a ruffed grouse shattered a summer cottage window killing itself. Mrs. John Long of Evanston Illinois was inside and was struck by glass shards.
Ottumwa police and county officers protested a Cedar Rapids statement by J Edgar Hoover calling Ottumwa one of Iowa's two principal gangster hangouts. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced that British and French military missions would depart for Moscow, with a Paris stop for consultations before joint talks with Soviet leaders on general effectiveness and an aid pact. Germany reportedly offered Slovakia to Hungary to force troop passage and encirclement of Poland. Britain declared readiness for any emergency and refused to recall Parliament unless public interest requires.
Concrete work adjacent to the illuminated memorial fountain in Central Park was to be finished today by Jack McKeone and his son Bernard after partial completion yesterday. Rain delayed operations. new walks across the park corners were built in 190% by McKeone. Donations for the fountain were announced by park board Chairman J. E. Lemmon.

Daughters of Veterans booth sales brought 61.25 dollars. The Booster club, led by Mrs. Fred D Stewart, will run booths tonight and Mrs Reid urges early purchase of fountain souvenirs.
The Sunbonnet club reports 687 members and aims to surpass 600 by week’s end amid ongoing membership badge sales during the Centennial celebration. Contest entries near completion with three Iowa City judges led by Mrs. Thomas Reese, plus several listed members like Marion Tietz and Mrs. Paul Wolfe.
Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed reported that nearly all Iowa corn has passed the critical pollination stage under favorable weather. The update notes an unusually favorable growing period improving yields and crop prospects statewide.

Plans outlined for North Second Avenue underpass dedication, annual fried chicken feed on August 15 at a country club, Labor Day automobile races, and a bingo concession on the square during Centennial celebration.
Arrangements have Washington banks to place seven thousand silver dollars into circulation for use during the Centennial celebration. The coins will begin circulating late this week and local merchants are expected to adopt them in lieu of paper money. The move honors the traditional era when silver dollars were the primary medium of exchange.
