A fifteen year old boy nicknamed Billy disappeared after fleeing an Iowa foster home the police had located weeks earlier. He had previously run away from an orphanage and did not reveal his last night.
A fire attracted about 4 000 people and ruined a large hollow tile dairy barn on a farm two miles west of Garner owned by Mayor I C Hastings. Loss was set at 7 000 dollars.
Des Moines State Treasurer W G Bagley announced a state wide drive to enforce posting of gasoline and oil prices at all wholesale and retail establishments. The 1937 law was upheld by the state supreme court and field men were instructed to seek full compliance.
Jefferson prepares for a historic event as Charles F. Abel, famed glider pilot from Chicago, will carry letters and goodwill messages from Fort Dodge to the Jefferson air field, marking the state’s first glider mail run during the weekend air show.
In Council Bluffs Lewis A. Wilson a farmer faced arraignment in municipal court over parking a lift team in a restricted area. He argued there is no place to hitch a team in town and questioned what a man should do when buying groceries. Judge Daniel Sheehan presided.
A brother and housekeeper will share in the estate of former District Judge C. C. Bradley. The will leaves $19,000 to Darwin J Bradley of Topeka Kansas, a brother. The remainder goes to Mrs. Mary J. Arendt, the judge's longtime house keeper. W. Scott Reininger is named executor.
The schedule for the underpass dedicatory ceremonies lists a 7:30 parade from the square led by a band, an 8:00 greeting by R E B Shannon with Mayor Lytle introducing officials, a speech by S W Livingston, a ribbon ceremony, and a band performance. A dance sponsored by the American Legion follows on the north side of the underpass.
A health exhibit will be shown in the basement of United Presbyterian church at 215 South Marion during the Centennial on August 8 9 and 10. Sponsored by the Washington County health unit with the County Medical society County Dental society and the Safety Council. Admission is free and the public is urged to attend. The exhibit covers public health medicine dentistry and accident prevention with several motion pictures likely on Tuberculosis Control in Iowa and syphilis control programs.
In Cleveland police guard the Fisher body plant riot zone as 200 officers patrol fears of attacks on non-strikers. A list naming 27 “worst scabs” with home addresses was distributed at union meetings amid a clash that left nearly 190 injured among 3,000 strikers and supporters.
Tonight's booster trip for the Centennial celebration will visit Wayland Olds and Winfield in that order. Chairman Glenn B. Holden asks those who can go to assemble in Central park at seven. The municipal band will supply music and lead parades in the three towns.
The legislative interim committee approved a 15 year lease on the new $40,000 armory at Washington at 3750 dollars a year. The move awaits approval by the state executive council and Governor Wilson. A sub committee planned to report on the long term lease after reviewing two year leases on 27 other armories.

Stretcher bearers Cloyce Gault and Pete Cnossen. sailors Dick Marshall and Arlo Burham. Troop F members join, led by Max Donaldson. Cavalry from the east features Cleo Mitchell Bob Lewis Glen Murphy and others.
The log cabin for antique exhibits is prepared and will be open daily with hours 9 to 12 and 1 to 5. Police protection will guard the displays at all times. Call committee members to arrange pickup of items for display led by chairman Hk. E. Dougherty.
Mrs. E. R. Cartwright of Ced ar Rapide spent today in the city at her beauty salon, enjoying a service session and catching up with local clients and staff.
Analysis shows 4022 grade crossing collisions in 1937 with 2070 in daylight and 1952 in darkness. Daylight incidents feature more locomotives striking cars and night incidents more cars striking the locomotive. Data traces motor vehicle train collision deaths from 1924 to 1937 with a net decline then a rise in later years.
White House sources say President Roosevelt will likely act within 24 hours on the Hatch bill to bar most federal employees from political activities. The president has until August 8 to act and a statement is expected explaining his action, with signs he may veto or sign.
The Chamber of Commerce requests use of forty cars for the Three Quarter Century club members in the centennial parade on Tuesday August 8th. Citizens able to provide cars should report to the Journal office this week. After the parade pioneer guests will be driven to the Country club for the annual Journal dinner. The Chamber will handle transportation.
Chairman J B Lemmon of the park board and Mrs E Reid report new contributions totaling 60.00 to complete the fountain project. Concrete work for the walk around the fountain began this morning. Donations listed include Sam P Donahey 1, Four Square Gospel Church 4, Miss Addie Harmon 1, Lexington Ladies Aid Society 2.
Chairman Dick McCleery announced that Judge Dewey sent a letter accepting the invitation to speak at the Centennial celebration. The letter said attending as a speaker would fulfill a dream, noting his Washington birth, local law practice, county attorney service, district judgeship, federal judgeship under President Coolidge, and eventual move to Des Moines.
Twenty seven persons including one woman were convicted in Washington county court last year ending July 1. Sentences ranged from Fort Madison penitentiary to jail and fines. motor vehicle intoxication led to ten convictions. forgery theft entering and assault were common charges. Expenses centered on jail maintenance and county attorney salaries.
The Y M C A will host a summer swimming exhibition next Thursday evening August 3 at 7 29 PM. Howard Little directs each class in their regular activities and will oversee the exhibition. Tickets may be secured from the Y M C A.
Entries for the pet parade are coming in, with boys and girls decorating bikes and groups planning wagon convoys with dogs and costumes. Seven of twelve prisoners in Washington county jail sit there for bad checks. Three jailed for forging checks, four for cashed checks that were bad. Walter J Kempf of Wellman latest to enter, serving fifteen days from Justice T W Zillmer. Remaining prisoners include one on false pretenses, one for bootlegging, one for intoxication, one for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and another awaiting action on desertion.

In Washington on August 1 the House refused to consider a loan authorization bill totaling 1.95 billion dollars. The defeat, by 193 to 166, was achieved by a coalition of Republicans and conservative Democrats and prevents further action on the measure in this Congress.

A tall man in a tan suit held up the Auburn State Bank in Auburn Indiana today. He threatened staff with a pistol and escaped with a large amount of money. officials say no accomplice was observed.
