Washington County 4-H clubs will send 17 entries to the Iowa State Fair after winning judging this week. Ten entries focus on food and nutrition, with three home improvements and three clothing items, plus one creative arts entry.
UPI reports investigators seek the man Hoffa planned to meet on Wednesday night in Detroit area. Authorities fear kidnap or murder as Gov Milliken says Hoffa vanished after a planned meeting with a reputed Mafia leader. Hoffa's abandoned car was found in Bloomfield Hills with no solid leads.
Attendance set new records as four day county fair activities drew large crowds despite heat. Beef and sheep auctions, with 145 calves selling for total 75 416 76 dollars and grand champion price 0 95 per pound paid by Ainsworth State Bank, highlighted the finale alongside a new demolition derby event won by LaVerne Redlinger Marv Johnson and Glenn Rowe.
Arcadia Carroll County Cascade and Monroe ran low on water as July, one of the driest on record, tightened supplies. Arcadia officials reserved a fourth well for fires, while Cascade declared a water emergency amid rapidly falling water tables and fears of insufficient water to fight fires in a few days.
Washington logged a 20 year rainfall low with 45 inches in July worsening crop conditions. ASCS Director Bill Day warns ten days without rain could ravage fields as heat and poor pollination drive ear underdevelopment. corn yields may fall below normal and soybeans show underdevelopment amid drought.
President Ford calls for major reductions in East and West bloc militaries and warns that peace must be honored beyond a signature. He presses for practical followup on human rights pledges, noting detente must be a two way street, while Brezhnev signals cautious support. In remarks at Finlandia Hall he pledges flexibility to move stalled talks on military reductions. Two minor traffic accidents in Washington County leave four youths injured and cars damaged.
Winners announced for open class hog show and pig derby on closing night of the fair. Arvid Anderson Crawfordsville and Jim Ledger Washington led hog show honors while Robert Carter Kalona had top lightweight. Richard Juhl judged. Pig derby top pen of four driven by Anderson with 1.99 lb daily gain. Carter and Ledger among top placers. Quarters of beef won by Bob Truax and Susan Gilmore. front quarters Jill Schulze and Lynn Wagamon.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies this afternoon with warm, humid air and a chance of thundershowers developing. Tonight and Saturday bring showers and thunderstorms, with lows in the mid to upper 60s and highs around mid 80s. Southeast winds at 10 to 15 mph. Rain chances: 30 percent this afternoon, 80 percent tonight, and 50 percent Saturday.
