Marilyn Gilliand, 13, took Grand Champion in Baby Beef with her 1,050 pound Angus at the Washington County Fair. Robert Emde, 20, of Wellman earned Reserve Champion in Baby Beef. The crowd in the fairgrounds show barn cheered as Marilyn, daughter of Harold and Mrs. Gilliand, celebrated her third year showing livestock. Emde, living with his parents east of Wellman, also claimed a reserve with an 1,080 pound Angus. Weather drew near record crowds as the fair continues with 4-H judging, horse shows, and upcoming sales and parade of champions.

More than 4,000 people watched Peg McKinstry of West Chester crowned Miss Washington County of 1962 at the fairgrounds. She tied with three other contestants initially, then won after final judging by state Jaycees. McKinstry, a junior at Iowa Wesleyan College, will compete in Miss Iowa at Clear Lake.

Fourteen 4-H Travelers Hurt When Bus overturns near Manchester
A chartered bus carrying 39 people including 34 Massachusetts 4-H youths overturned on U.S. 20 west of Manchester Iowa. One woman Frances Herrmann 37 of Adams Mass sustained a fractured wrist and was hospitalized. The group had spent a week with Buchanan County 4H in Independence Iowa before heading home toward Massachusetts with chaperones and the driver Frank Herrin 49 of West Brookfield Mass. Dozens suffered minor injuries. most passengers exited quickly and were treated at a local hospital. The group was on a Massachusetts Iowa exchange tour returning home Saturday.

Daniel J. Gingerich 86 of Kalona died at his farm home this morning. Funeral services will be at Harley Miller home north of Kalona Friday at 9 30 a m with Yoder Funeral Home in charge. Burial in Gingerich Cemetery. He was born March 6 1876 in John son County to Jacob J. and Elizabeth Gingerich. He married Barbara Miller on Sept 17 1907. she died April 25 1955. Survived by two sons Irvin D and Paul D of Kalona two daughters Mrs Jonathan Miller and Mrs Harley Miller both of Kalona a brother Mahlon J Gingerich of Kalona and a sister Mrs Sam Hershberger of Tennessee.
