Britain orders Soblen sent back to United States

Britain rejected political asylum for Dr. Robert Soblen and ordered his return to the United States to begin a life sentence for espionage. Home Secretary Henry Brooke told Parliament there was no ground for asylum and El Al was instructed to fly Soblen home after his self inflicted injuries halted a London hospital stay.

Tractors Entered In Washington County Fair Pull

Forty eight tractors entered the tractor pulling contest at the Washington County Fair. Marion Wehr of Keota won Class D with a Ford weighing 8,501 to 10,500 pounds. Other top finishers include Carl Roberts of Ainsworth, Jerry Farmash of West Chester, and Dick Stewart of West Chester in various classes.

Dick Ballard Band to Receive NBCA Citation

Dick Ballard of Washington is nominated by a NBCA member for an outstanding band citation. The award will be presented at the NBCA convention at the Sheraton Chicago on Monday September 24. Ballard may travel to Chicago for the event if his schedule allows.

Kiwanis Club Luncheon Held At County Fair

Kiwanis Club members gathered at the fairgrounds for a Wednesday noon luncheon. An outdoor meal was served from the Kiwanis Eat Stand operated by the club during the County Fair. Marilyn Morris of Columbus Junction named Pork Queen and will compete in the state contest on Monday August 20.

Farm Service Co merger names Iowa directors

Harvey Holden of Washington joins five Iowans named to the board of the new F. S. Services Inc formed by the Iowa and Illinois Farm Bureau Service Companies merger. Delegates from Iowa and Illinois voted approval, creating the first cross state bureau service merger, headquartered in Bloomington.

Frank Holmes Dies Wednesday Afternoon

Frank Holmes 89 retired farmer of Richland died at 4 30 p m Wednesday in Good Samaritan Home near Ottumwa after two months of illness. Funeral set for Saturday 2 p m Gould Funeral Home Richland with Rev John E McCracken officiating. Burial in Brooks Cemetery south of Packwood. He was born June 3 1873 in Marshfield Indiana and married Caroline Hutt Sept 21 1902 in Fairfield. Survivors include three sons Rae Paul Warnie a stepdaughter Hazel Jackson and extended family.

Ainsworth Church To Hold Picnic Sunday

The Ainsworth Methodist Church invites members and friends to a noon Sunday picnic on the school grounds at the northwest edge of Ainsworth. Drinks will be furnished by the W.S.C.S. All are welcome to attend.

Southeast District FFA welding contest shines at fair

The Annual Southeast District FFA welding contest at the Washington County Fair drew rising participation and interest. Bloomfield team led by Roy Davis Dee Brake and Dean Long won top team with 233 points while Kenneth Kurtz Fairfield captured top individual with 84 points. Additional awards went to Fairfield Muscatine Keota Williamsburg Oskaloosa Belle Plaine Mid Prairie Washington. ISU judge Prof Morford and others evaluated welded projects and small project divisions.

Brisk Bidding Marks Final Day at Washington County Fair

Bidding ran hot at the Washington County Fair final day with several grand and reserve champions sold. Top lot was Maralyne Gilliland's 1,045 pound Angus at 50 cents a pound for 522.50, followed by other champion beef and Hereford sales to local buyers and banks. The sale total for 120 beef calves was expected around 30 cents an item, as the event moved toward the horse show this afternoon with races at 2 and 8 pm.

Eppley Sisters to Perform at Washington Baptist Church

The Eppley Sisters Gospel Quintet from York Pennsylvania will give a program at the Washington Baptist Church on Thursday August 9 at 7 30 p m. Sara Mary Verna Lorraine and Pauline present vocal quintets solos on soprano and alto piano pieces and instrumental numbers on vibra harp violin electric Hawaiian guitar saxophone accordions cathedral chimes musical saw and organ. Kennedy Says U S Ready For New Nuclear Test Ban Terms

President Kennedy signaled readiness to offer Moscow easier terms for a nuclear test ban if inspections on Soviet soil are allowed. He said Arthur Dean will return to Geneva with a revised proposition and that on site inspections may be reduced though still needed to distinguish blasts from earthquakes.

Linda Timmins Wins Washington County Style Revue

Linda Timmins of Cedar Clippers was named the Washington County Style Revue winner with a two piece avocado ensemble and black patent accessories. She will represent Washington County at the Iowa State Fair in August. First runner-up was Susan Huber. several others received honorable mention or ribbon awards across multiple clubs.

Services Saturday For Clarence A Wright

Funeral services for Clarence A. Wright 77 of route 2 Ainsworth are set for Saturday at 1 30 p.m. in the John B. Turner Son chapel Cedar Rapids with Rev Barton G Murray in charge. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Wright died Tuesday night after a brief illness. He is the grandfather of Mrs Gilbert Wood of Ainsworth and brother of Everett Wright of Washington. He was born January 4 1885 in Chatfield Minnesota and married Bertha West February 2 1908 in Sioux Falls South Dakota. Survivors include his wife two daughters Mrs Matt Lytle Ely and Mrs Clarence Stewart Cedar Rapids three sons Walter Wright Sioux Falls Everett Wright Washington Milton Wright Glen Ellyn Illinois 12 grandchildren 12 great grandchildren and three sisters Mrs William Miller and Mrs W G Bergeson Vallejo California Mrs Noah Branson Joliet Illinois.

Bad Day at County Fair for the Joneses

At the Crawfordsville county fair Cindy Jones, a teen from the area, was knocked down by a calf during the baby beef show but recovered to continue. Joe Jones, a high school senior, was struck by a steer, injuring his leg and leaving him with two right shoes before the 4-H style revue.

Washington County Horse Show Opens at Fairgrounds

The Washington Saddle Club hosts the county fair horse show with two sessions at 2 PM and 8 PM. Top tri-state horses from Iowa Illinois and Missouri compete with Bill Haney as judge Raymond Bonar as ringmaster Joy Weiler as organist and Janet Wilson as announcer.

Workmen Start Paving On Riverside Road

Paving crews began surfacing the Washington Riverside road yesterday morning and finished the first mile by noon today. If weather stays favorable, they should complete paving the road north of Washington in a short time.
