Major battle routs North Vietnamese unit near Cambodian border

Allied forces report 149 Communist deaths in actions near the Cambodian border and the DMZ. In a key engagement, U S tanks and infantry routed a North Vietnamese unit from a bunker complex, with 64 killed. Far north near the DMZ, South Vietnamese troops killed 85 more in two clashes as U S armored units and air cavalry supported the fight. U S casualties were four killed and 30 wounded. B52s conducted 33 raids in six days to deter further attacks by North Vietnamese divisions. <END>

House OKs truck fee hike in road funds bill

DES MOINES Iowa cities win a 5 million boost in road use tax for street programs funded by a substantial truck fee increase. The Republican backed bill passed the House 93 to 27 with 20 to 33 percent fee hikes. amendments to weaken the measure were defeated.

Des Moines firemen marched into a second night of strike action after a Tuesday vote to continue it. Iowa lawmakers hear warning on strict sex crime penalties

Des Moines psychiatrist Dr. John H. Hege Sr. warned the Senate Law Enforcement Committee that overly harsh prison terms for sex crimes against children could raise the risk to victims as offenders hide identities. Hege said most offenses involve exhibitionism or fondling, often by relatives or neighbors, and urged careful study of laws before acting.

Governor Ray outlines Iowa session adjournment goals

Mississippi at very high crest floods in eastern Iowa

The Mississippi River reached one of its highest levels in history as it moved past eastern Iowa. In Burlington the crest reached 18.3 feet with dikes holding and residents staying put. Davenport reported the third-highest stage, while Dubuque reopened flooded streets upstream. The Army Corps stored water behind Red Rock and Coralville reservoirs to ease crests, with Red Rock at 33.5 feet and Coralville 16 feet above normal spring levels.
