Taxing truckers and lessees split by Iowa ruling

A tax row in Iowa centers on who must pay the federal highway use tax for leased trucks. The state AG is expected to rule that the vehicle must be registered in the owner’s name, meaning lessees pay if they lease the truck. Firms owning outright would pay too, with several hundred thousand dollars at stake. Also noted are safe self serve liquor stores and actions by Insurance Commissioner Timmons on cold canvas telemarketing, plus university regent seats, Hickenlooper’s influence, and local appointments including Fort Dodge’s new city treasurer.
