Astronauts Study Moon Landscape From Kitt Peak Summit

Six U.S. astronauts including Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins examined the lunar surface through the world’s largest solar telescope at Kitt Peak Arizona. The three day Arizona expedition trains them as field geologists for future moon missions, with work at Sunset Crater and other sites highlighting lava formations and volcanic ash.

Martin G Tweeton Dies at Kalona Age 88

Martin G Tweeton, 88, died at 7 a m today at Pleasantview Home Kalona where he had lived two years. Funeral services will be at Peterseim Funeral Home Kalona at 1 p m Sunday with Rev William McDermott. A service will be at 2 p m Monday Apostel and Lutheran Church near Hawley Minn burial in the cemetery. He was born Oct 28 1880 near Barnesville Minn son of George and Mary Tweeton married Aug 4 1922 to Anna Kramme. He and wife spent most of their lives in northern states and moved to Kalona six years ago. Survivors include his widow two sons Dr Marvin Tweeton Kalona and Donald Redondo Beach Calif and seven grandchildren.

Concert band tours Washington High School day long

Washington High School concert band completed its annual day long tour with a morning show at Millersburg Deep River, a visit to the school for the blind at Vinton including a braille music tour, then supper at Lindale Plaza before returning home. The group and chorus also plan their joint concert at the local school on May 7.

Kidnap Suspect Held as Boy’s Remains Found

Remains of 7-year-old Lewis Wilson from St. Petersburg were found in a snake-infested area of Venice. Authorities linked the child’s disappearance to Joseph Bryan Jr., held in New Orleans on kidnapping charges. FBI probes possible ties to other missing children, while Bryan sought a lawyer.

Red Cross meeting on Southeast Town Association agenda

Mother pleads for return of kidnapped day old son

In Chicago four days after Paul Joseph Fronczak was abducted from Michael Reese Hospital, his mother Dora Fronczak appeals tearfully to the kidnapper to return the infant. Police and FBI conduct a wide search, releasing a new sketch as the family begs for the child's safe return.

Kalona New Life Ranch opens with initial enrollments

Kalona New Life Ranch Inc began operation on Saturday April 4 as two men from Moline Illinois arrived seeking release from slavery to drink. A third man enrolled on April 6. Gerald Kremer ranch manager and Eugene Garber counselor report a good start amid expected hard work ahead.

Road E O set for May 6 at local high school

Washington County high school students invited to the annual Road E O with two divisions a written test and driving skill contest. Writing tests start then driving course at the high school. Prizes include two trophies for top boys and girls locally and a Mercury Comet for the national winner.

Shavers urged to buy permits to save before May first

Washington officials remind men who shave between now and June they can save two dollars by buying a Smoothie Badge and a shaver permit before May first. Brothers of the Brush say the three dollar permit lets buyers apply the two dollar savings toward an anniversary plate, effectively getting a plate free.

Goodwill Tour Planned to Fairfield Friday Evening

County project lettings announce low bids for fuels and seal coat

Two Washington County project lettings reported. Standard Oil Co was low bidder to furnish gasoline to the county and Farm Service Co was low bidder on the diesel fuel bid. Brower Construction Co of Sioux City was low bidder on a seal coat project for Wayland and Highway 76 roads this summer, bidding $19 260.04 for both roads.

Mushrooms Pop Up In Town Yard Mystery

Mrs Aileen Snider found a yard full of grey mushrooms on West Main Street near the old junior high. Joe Cochran confirmed the find and brought back a quarter bucket of mushrooms from the Snider home. Earlier, Mr and Mrs Walter Sheets reported 45 small mushrooms growing in their lawn nearby.
