The 108-day Iowa legislature session ran a $337,500 bill per State Comptroller Co. B. Murtagh figures, higher than earlier sessions. The 1935 session cost $830,000, with house salaries at $109,000 and senator salaries at $52,400. Legislators are paid $1,900 for a regular session.
Mr and Mrs R A Barlow rode home by street car though they owned a new car. They waved to the salesman and readied for the War Eagle bowling alleys to tell friends they were on wheels. Ten minutes later they walked back to the parking place and the car was gone.
Iowa City artist William Mc Cloy swept the fourth annual student salon at the Memorial Union with seven award winning entries. His works Old Hugh and Lost Horizons won top honors in oil and monochrome categories.
University of Iowa flying club members spent weeks constructing a glider at the Iowa City airport. Bob Hale, club press, arranged a trial flight to prove the craft would fly, and the test confirmed it successful.

A 29 ounce premature baby born at three months early survived his first day after being placed in an oven roaster as an improvised cradle. The infant 13 inches long was taken to Mercy Hospital where he was placed in an incubator and fed pasteurized breast milk. He is the son of Mr and Mrs James Howard with a 23 year old father and 19 year old mother.
Priscilla Morrison Sellman joins the Little Theater of the Rockies at Colorado State College of Education in Greeley for the 1927 season. She is among 22 seasoned players chosen from hundreds, with two performances weekly over six weeks from June 39th to August 5th.
Anna Marie Bassler, 12, and her sister Regina, 5, leapt from a railroad bridge into a creek to avoid being crushed by an onrushing passenger train. Police said the incident marked a second close call this year for the siblings.
More than 150 motorists attended Mason City police department traffic school to escape paying a nominal fine for minor violations. Most were sentenced for overtime parking. Thursday night’s class was the largest in the school’s history.

Mrs J R Rees aged 54 died at Bellevue hospital Muscatine after strokes and poor health. Funeral services set for 1 pm in Ritche funeral home Columbus Junction and 2 pm at Crawfordsville Presbyterian church with burial near Crawfordsville. Born Finna Effie Twinam in 1888 she married J R Rees February 7 1896. Survived by daughter Mrs Elmer Hakanson son Kenneth Rees husband and grandson Richard Hakanson, three brothers B D Twinam L A Twinam A H Twinam and sister Mrs Eli White plus additional sister and brother deceased.
Washington St Pauls Evangelical church in Sigourney reopens after remodeling with a morning twelve o’clock service led by Rev E K Schneider of Sigourney. Rev Carl W Klein hosts the program and Elmhurst college faculty and students join for a 6:35 youth service. Dr Timothy Lehmann of Elmhurst college delivers the evening sermon.

The heaviest rainfall in weeks totaled 1.08 inches according to today’s official report. The downpour washed pavements clean and, combined with prior rain, left county soils in good condition and benefiting lawns and pastures.

A visiting speaker from Baltimore and Columbus, Ohio, now at Elmhurst College, travels widely and brings a virile message. The high school quartet under Miss Helen Coffey will sing at the evening service. All friends of the congregation are invited to attend Sunday services.
The Washington junior college staged Big Hearted Herbert by Sophie Kerr and Anna Steele Richardson. John Coulter as Herbert and Anna Plummer as his wife led a strong cast including Gene Tucker as Herbert Jr and Roger Richer as Andrew Goodrich. The comedy follows a stingy father whose family rebels at his tyranny and highlights a turning point thanks to a sharp, well-directed performance by Opal Keeney.
Funeral services for Mary Alice Cunningham, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cunningham, who died suddenly yesterday, will be held Sunday at 2 30 p.m. at L A Jones funeral home. Rev Arthur Atack will officiate. Interment is in Elm Grove cemetery. She was educated at public schools Washington High School and Iowa State University earning a BA with majors in history and mathematics. She taught five years at Persia Iowa High School before ill health. Survived by her father John Cunningham mother Mayme Morton Cunningham and sisters Virginia Ruth and Betty plus nineteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Virginia Ruth and Betty are teachers and all three were at home last night.
The play’s success was aided by Catherine Masson as stage manager along with Leona Kurtz Inez Schoonover Marjorie Strong Louise Porter as assistants and Kathryn Stewart as house manager. Moonlight Serenaders provided music before the show as a group of high school musicians. Show starts at 8 o'clock in the auditorium.
Washington mourns the death of Mrs. Art Anderson of Clinton aged about 42. She passed away in Jane Lamb hospital after several weeks of illness. Survived by her parents in Nebraska, a daughter Beatrice and two sons Walter George and Robert, all at home. The family had moved from northeastern Nebraska to Washington years ago. Funeral plans not yet announced.
Drivers in Sunset park are urged by the city park commission to keep cars on the drives. Chairman Frank Miller said some persist in driving on soft turf, marping the park’s appearance. The commission notes there are plenty of drives and urges use of them. Citizens seeing cars elsewhere in the park should notify the city marshal.
A journal clarifies an error in VFW notes pointing to a 10 year old Washington resolution. The writeup had implied a local group adopted National Americanization Day on April 27, correcting the misstatement.
In Knoxville the self appointed canine guardian named Spike, known for protecting city mail carriers for about a decade, was recovering from head lacerations and bruises after being struck by a car. None of the mail carriers were bitten while he accompanied them.
Loyd Morrison of Grinnell traveled to Washington today for business commitments.
Mrs. W. J. Brooks aged 82 of Washington Iowa was killed in a head on crash a mile north of North Liberty on Highway 161. Her son James Brooks, driver of the other car, was hospitalized in Iowa City with injuries described as not serious. Johansen and Ziekovsky provided witness accounts as the vehicles collided on a curve while Brooks tried to pass. Funeral plans await body return to L. A. Jones funeral home. Mrs. Brooks, a 1897 long-time resident, was born Naomi Allison in Pennsylvania and married W. J. Brooks in 1880. She and her husband had two children James and Mrs Walter M. Kyle.
State health leaders W. Bierring and Dr. Haygood met with county officials including Dr. Walsh and nursing head Alma Hartz to discuss the county health unit Maternal Work. The special session focused on care of expectant mothers and plans to expand that program with the county medical society.
