Washington County food stamp sale dates announced

The May food stamp sale dates are May 5 6 and 20. May 5 covers city residents of Washington while May 6 is for other parts of the county and May 20 for all county residents. Purchases occur at the Department of Social Services Office at 212 North Iowa from 9 30 to 11 30 a m.

History copies available to Historic Conger House members

Members entitled to Littler's History may pick up copies Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Conger House. Some applicants preferred in person pickup, so first distribution date is May 1.

Highland band concert and Junior High festival notice

The Highland Elementary and Junior High Band Concert is set for Friday evening May 6 at 7 30 p m in the Highland High School auditorium with trumpet quartets from seventh and eighth grades. Admission is free. The Junior High Band Festival Concert follows Tuesday May 10 at 7 30 p m in Mediapolis featuring Highland Columbus Junction Wapello and Mediapolis Junior High Bands with two numbers per band and four by the Honor Band of top students.

Pony Express Riders Raise Over 167000 for Camp Sunnyside

Pony Express Riders of Iowa collected 167093 for Easter Seals Camp Sunnyside in a two day ride across 90 counties topping the 1977 goal by over 17000. All funds go directly to the Des Moines area camp north of the city.

Washington Concert Association sells out season

The Washington Concert Association closed memberships early as the 550 seat McCleery Auditorium reached oversold capacity for the 1977 1978 season. New members will be welcome at the Lee Erwin organ concert this Saturday. The board meeting is set for Monday at 7 30 p.m. at the Richard Paul home.

County pay up across the state

Salaries of Iowa county officials rise on July 1 by an average 5.78 percent under the new compensation boards system. Sheriff pay leads gains at 6.61 percent, with county attorneys close behind at 6.54 percent. Highest earner is Polk County Attorney at 34,650 dollars. Data covers several counties and notes a shift to full-time county attorney in Appanoose County.

Carriers Enter Cash Award Contest For Washington Evening Journal

A May contest offers $65 in prizes plus bonuses for carriers who gain new subscriptions or persuade current subscribers to switch to paying in advance. Doobie Brothers Fire Sparks Runway-Stage Blaze at Iowa Fieldhouse

The Doobie Brothers lit up the University of Iowa Fieldhouse with fireworks during a Thursday show. Firework flames touched overhead curtains as smoke rose. state firefighters quickly subdued the blaze with extinguishers. No injuries were reported among the band or about 10,000 fans, though soot and extinguisher residue required cleanup.

Driver injured in fiery crash in Washington County

Two hospitalized with broken legs after three highway accidents. Five year old Ryan Stalder was hit on North Fourth and East 11th at 7:57 a.m. and transported to Washington County Hospital. A Kansas City truck driver, Edward E. Davis, was injured in a semi crash on Highway 218 and sent to University Hospital in Iowa City after a fire destroyed the truck and cargo, with total damage pegged at $95,000. A separate crash near intersections of highways 1 and 92 caused $4,200 in vehicle damage. Norton cited for failure to stop. In Phoenix, FBI agents arrested Tom Hanley and his son for the murder of Las Vegas union leader Al Bramlet.
