Denver Development test and speech and hearing screenings will be given May 3 to all children entering Lincoln or Stewart school kindergarten classes next fall. The Lincoln gym hosts all new kindergartners. Tuesday’s schedule divides by last names: A B 9:00, C D 9:30, F H 10:00, J L 10:30, M R 1:00, 1:30, T Z 2:00.
The Richland Betterment Council for Richland will meet Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Lions Club Building. Bruce Bullemore of the Regional Planning Commission explained his office functions and how they assist small towns. Richland City Council plans a May meeting agenda to discuss town betterment and Bullemore will prepare ideas and a survey for the Richland area.
A public hearing on a proposed new sewer system for Ollie is set for Monday May 2 at City Hall. A representative from the French Reneker firm will attend to answer questions. The meeting begins at 7 30 p m. Ollie lacks a city water system and residents have debated options to supply water for the town and surrounding rural area over the past year.
Negotiators reached a six week old strike accord in Chariton Iowa involving Teamsters Local 147 and Hy Vee warehouse workers. The agreement ends a walkout at the Chariton facility with terms pending ratification by union members and company officials.
Redwood City Calif UPI Sheriff Richard Hongisto who runs San Francisco's jails is jailed as an inmate at San Mateo County Jail. He was booked on a contempt charge for refusing to obey a court order to evict tenants of the International Hotel in Chinatown San Francisco. The tenants, many poor and elderly, say eviction would disrupt their lives and leave them unable to find affordable lodging.
Los Angeles man Frank Harris, 28, went to traffic court to check warrants and was found to have a murder warrant from Fresno. Police say Harris shot Ernest Buford, 46, during a holdup March 11. Buford died three weeks later. Harris was arrested and held for Fresno police.
Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms south through Sunday. North areas stay partly cloudy tonight then grow cloudy with a chance of storms Sunday. Lows tonight in the upper 40s to low 50s. Sunday highs range from the 60s in the northwest to the 70s in the south and east.
The Senate approved major tax cut proposals including standard deduction hikes for singles and couples, simplified forms for 74 percent of filers, a $250 elder care credit, a 2 percent investment or new jobs credit for businesses, and extended current cuts through 1978. The sick pay deduction and foreign income changes are delayed to 1977.
Senate passage of a broad tax cut clears major individual provisions with three of four taxpayers expected to receive about 100 to 200 dollar cuts and forms that require no calculations. The bill, approved 73 to 7, still needs House conference action. A $50 per person rebate was removed at President Carter's request.
Washington based UPI reports Agriculture Department economists raised 1977 food inflation forecasts by one percentage point citing uncertain coffee price rises. Dairy products rise due to higher government price supports while vegetable oil and processed fruit and vegetable prices may be higher than prior estimates. Earlier projections of a 4 to 5 percent grocery price rise above 1976 if weather stayed good were revised to 4 to 6 percent. 1976 gain was 3 percent.
Red Adair led a daredevil crew that finally halted a week long North Sea oil blowout at Ekofisk using extended blind ram strokes and heavy drilling mud. The well had spewed 28 000 barrels a day, creating a 2100 square mile slick before the final seal. Production near by wells may resume after government approval as pollution officials report low recovery of spilled oil.
Iowa Senate refused to move restaurant inspection duties from the Department of Agriculture to the Department of Health. Senators argued the health department lacks requested staff and that a conflict of interest exists if one agency promotes and inspects food. Debate ends for weekend with no final vote, plans for next week.
DES MOINES UP I The Iowa House approved a key budget move transferring 9 million dollars from the Military Service Tax Credit Fund to the general fund in a 85 to 2 vote. Lawmakers say the surplus military tax credit money should bolster available resources amid a tight budget year.
The Senate confirmed Yale University President Kingman Brewster as ambassador to the Court of St James. The chamber also approved Georgians Philip Henry Alston as ambassador to Australia and Anne Cox Chambers as ambassador to Belgium. Robert Carswell was named deputy secretary of the Treasury and Jerome Kurtz to head the Internal Revenue Service.
Iowa lawmakers debate whether Attorney General Turner improperly halted a BCI probe into Ned Wehr, Scott County attorney and Republican power broker. The Senate Judiciary Committee questions ties to Wehr, Beek, and Schroeder while weighing possible impeachment amid adjournment pressure.
