Rep. Mike Hogan of Lake Charles introduces a bill to require signatures on editorials printed in the state. If enacted editors and publishers face a 500 dollar fine and up to six months in prison for publishing unsigned pieces.
Partly cloudy tonight and Friday with a drop in temperatures. Tonight’s low will be in the upper 30s to low 40s, and Friday’s high around 60. Winds will be east to northeast at 5 to 15 mph tonight.
The Washington Plan and Zoning Commission scheduled two public hearings for May 23 at 8 p.m. in the Municipal Building. Kenneth Fenn seeks to re-zone two full lots and part of adjoining lots on North Second Avenue to general business for Fenn Farm Service. Don Strabala asks to vacate an alley in the 200 block of South 15th Avenue in exchange for a deeded 16 foot strip for a new roadway. TheNicholson re-zoning request from industrial to business to build a house was denied unanimously.
The United States and Cuba announced a two part agreement on fishing rights in waters off Florida and within the U S 200 mile exclusive zone. Negotiations occurred in New York and Havana and aim to improve U S Cuban relations. Details were not immediately announced.
The Washington school board settled part of a disagreement over lower grade band cutbacks, delaying final decisions until May. Proposals to start fifth graders later and to abolish all elementary bands were debated alongside manpower concerns. A 3-3 tie blocked broader changes. officers urged further talks. The meeting also approved resignations, memorial scholarships, remodeling bids, a summer weight program, a Special Olympics trip, and textbooks.
The Iowa Senate Judiciary Committee voted to summon Attorney General Richard C. Turner and state officials to a Tuesday special session to discuss why the BCI probe into Scott County Attorney Edward N. Wehr was halted. Lawmakers clash over limits, scope, and potential malfeasance as they frame a fact finding mission amid concerns of a media event.
Donna Davisson of Washington was named recipient of the Rotary Club Community Service Award for a Washington High School student. The 1977 honor was presented at noon by Supt. E. K. Schlapkohl for her extensive school and community service including 4-H YWCA, band and choir leadership, state solo and ensemble, National Honor Society, DAR Citizenship Award, Student Council, Hi-Life, speech contests, and 6 years in 4-H with council secretary duties. The Rotary award began in 1967 and has honored many past students.
Washington CPSC bans spackling compounds and other wall patching mixes containing asbestos as well as asbestos containing imitation logs and ash used in gas fireplaces. It leaves open whether consumers can obtain refunds for existing purchases and how to issue safe return guidance to stores if refunds are ordered.
Economist John Kenneth Galbraith told a University of Iowa audience that some form of income and price restraints is needed to arrest inflation. He warned fiscal and monetary policy alone won’t suffice without tolerable unemployment and urged direct intervention in the corporate sector as an essential supplement. He compared U S moves to income policies abroad and described a bimodal economy with concentrated giants and vast small firms.
