Sheriff's deputies responded to a dawn break-in at Hamil's D X Station in Crawfordsville while Washington firefighters doused a shed fire behind the Orin Wallace residence on North Avenue D. Wind toppled two ladders onto power lines, triggering the blaze with limited damage reported.
The Rath Packing Co of Waterloo reports a net loss of 1.2 million dollars for the 13 weeks ending April 2 after providing 400 thousand for severance pay tied to ceasing certain meat processing lines. Net sales total 89.731 million versus 92.308 million a year earlier. Buena Vista County to spend 1 million on hospital addition in Storm Lake with referendum not required unless 1,500 voters request one.
The Labor Department reports an urban four person family needs 10 041 annually for a low budget, 16 236 for a moderate standard, and 23 759 for a high standard. Food costs 3 859, housing 3 843, medical care 900 on the moderate budget.

Iowa transportation official urges local adoption of a 9,000 foot radius tall-structure ordinance to protect the Washington Municipal Airport. The proposed FAA based rules limit building heights from 50 to 350 feet and require city and county actions plus public hearings. Nineteen officials attended the meeting at city hall.
Trooper Calvin D. Dorsett of Washington resigns from the Iowa Highway Patrol effective immediately. State officials confirm an internal affairs probe linked to the departure and say Dorsett was removed from payroll Tuesday. Dorsett, a 1965 recruit, leaves amid questions and a possible months-long wait for a replacement.
Iowa Senate panels approved bids to liberalize liquor sales, voting 8-3 to permit Sunday beer sales between noon and 10 pm and 8-5 to allow private wine sales by grocery stores, shifting power from state control. Critics warned revenue losses to cities and the state, while proponents argued higher consumption and a path to ending state involvement in liquor.
Washington High School choirs present In Praise of Spring on April 29 at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium.
