H EF. SAMSON presents a seven room dwelling for rent. Rev. Parkinson, returning from Washington, arrived in Atwood with a companion who walked toward What Cheer but ended up dining with a friend and catching a team to complete the trip after the train had left. An amusing delay provided the reverend some exercise.
Surveyor Kyle has completed the plat and the sewer committee plans to let contracts for extending the brick sewer network this year. The system will drain Washington thoroughly, improve health, and connect routes from Iowa street to Crooked Creek and beyond, with detailed depths and falls outlined for the main and auxiliary lines.
Central Station Des Moines reports a cold start with frost ice and sleet followed by a warm spell. Rainfall across central and southeastern Iowa ranged from 2 50 to 6 70 inches. state totals exceed normal April rainfall. Field work delayed oats seeding incomplete and planting preparations slowed. No crop damage reported from the 19th 20th freeze. Fruit largely escaped harm and early wheat and oats show strong growth. Conditions end the week more encouraging.
Dr E McConnaughey has leased rooms above I Klein's store, formerly Boice, and will open dental parlors soon. He has had a splendid education and his friends wish him success in the city.
Miss Kate Bentz mourns the death of her pet dog Keno Benz after it was struck by a Rock Island train while crossing a track on Saturday. The accident occurred late, and friends extend sympathy for the untimely loss.
Relatives in the city received notice of a new baby boy born today to Mr and Mrs J B McCartney in Oelwein. It is hoped John will educate the child to be a railroad worker.
Mr and Mrs John Baxbaum express gratitude to friends who offered help and sympathy during the illness and death of her mother Mrs Maynard.
The forecast predicts showers and thunder showers this afternoon and tonight, with a much cooler night and frost. Cooler conditions continue Thursday with a cooler east portion.
The marriage of Frank Vorhies of Merrimac and Clara Conrad will be held tonight at the Conrad home in South-east Washington. Only family will witness as Rev Thorn of the Methodist church officiates. The couple will travel to Merrimac on Thursday where Vorhies runs a farm.
The Young Ladies Society at the First United Presbyterian church held a Saturday meeting at Mrs Geo Eckerman's Hast Washington home. The groups contributed $34 from the Young Ladies Society $6.50 from the Helping Hand and $3.25 from the Mission Band.
Next Saturday night May 1 Prof Warren the phrenologist will lecture in The Graham Opera House. The science of phrenology will be fully explained with a class of volunteers read on stage. Admission three cents and the lecture starts at 8 15 P M for a pleasant evening of instruction and amusement.
Wells and McCulley loaded a car load of hogs today and shipped it over the Narrow Gauge to Chicago.
An advertisement asserts deafness from inflammation of the Eustachian tube can be cured only by constitutional remedies. It offers one hundred dollars for any catarrh related deafness not cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure, and promotes related products from F J Cheney & Co of Toledo with circulars available.
Licenses to wed have been granted to Frank H. Vorhies and Clara A Conrad, William D. Stafford and Eliza Lucker, and W J Speracek and Mary Telin.
Court activity notes a civil case by Wallace against Patterson for a bicycle, which was dismissed as the dispute was settled. The rest reports on furniture sales, a moving remodeling job, a cider sale trial date, chemistry tests, and social entertainments.
The Aurora Literary Society at the Academy held a dedicatory session with Mazie Stewart's address. New officers installed include Will Bailey president Elizabeth Dawson vice president Lona Latta recording secretary Elwyn Latta treasurer Miss Eric Porter corresponding secretary Anna Buxbaum usher Pearl Elder sergeant Miss Morrow assistant sergeant. A program featured declamations lectures music and a debate on secret society with a negative vote. Five dollars raised will boost the treasury.

Kilmer Wells and John McCulley buy cattle for shipment. Mrs Glasgow White paints the late Mrs A Anderson. Anti-Saloon league organized in Riverside with new president M. Brown. Mrs Maynard burial accompanies party from Sigourney. Will Law leaves Wilde and Son to lead Oskaloosa Electric Light Co. Community bid farewell with best wishes.
Three sealed bids will be received by Alderman Ro Campbell at Campbell & Bowman's meat market until Monday noon May 5 for brick sewer construction 583 feet plus 100 feet, excavation of 1685 feet for brick sewer and 1416 feet for 1 inch pipes, plus laying 42 feet of 1 inch pipe. Profiles and specs are at the meat shop. The committee may reject any bid.
Washington citizens are warned to clear alleys of any offensive matter and to remove decayed vegetation fruit and animal refuse. Dead or decaying material must be buried in a designated dumping ground. Horse owners must install miniature boxes and maintain safe distances from streets. Bonfires must be supervised until safe. Proclamation takes effect April 27 1897 signed by Mayor Ross.
