A complete run-through of the musical South Pacific will be held at the Washington Community Center starting at 7 p.m. The session invites all interested in singing and acting parts to attend.

Theft at Wayne's Tire & Oil Station on Washington Street

Thieves broke into Wayne's Tire & Oil on Washington Street during the night Monday and stole an unannounced amount of cash. City police are investigating. An entry was attempted at the nearby APCO station but nothing was found missing.

Robbery by check at West Des Moines Dial Finance

A holdup man armed with a pistol forced an employee to write a $1,000 check at a Dial Finance Co office in West Des Moines Iowa and then cashed it at First National Bank before escaping. Police said the attacker claimed to want a loan and locked staff in a bathroom before fleeing in a car.

Iowa juvenile home worker tied to runaways scandal

Polk County supervisors planned a closed session to discuss disciplinary action against Jon R. Ramsey at the County Juvenile Home. Ramsey, 27, allegedly sheltered known runaways and dropped two girls on a freeway to hitchhike after serving time for robbery. Assistant director Paul Skinner was asked to resign effective May 2.

Hussein Carter Hope for Peace In Middle East Talks

President Carter and Jordanian King Hussein spoke with wary optimism about achieving Middle East peace this year at a state dinner in the State Dining Room. Carter warned that if progress is not made this year future efforts may be delayed, while Hussein pledged to do all he can so that future generations can enjoy a better life.

Iowa House approves election day registration proposal

The Iowa House passed 72 to 12 a bill to allow registration on election day with rules for ID or an affidavit, and to use paper ballots counted three days after elections. If enacted, results in close races may not be known until Friday after the election.

Senate Republicans plan a Wednesday vote on a 7.9 billion dollar yearly income tax cut. They will quiz Carter administration spokesmen at a Budget Committee session over Blumenthal Lance and Schultze about the rebate withdrawal and budget projection errors.

Lee Erwin Headlines Final Concert of Season

The Evening Journal reports renowned theater organist and composer Lee Erwin will close the Concert Association season with a program at McCleery Auditorium this Saturday night, April 30. Erwin, famed for new scores to classic silent films, moonlit radio and Arthur Godfrey appearances, teaches at Lehman College and trained in Paris under Andre Marchal after Huntsville beginnings.

Carter pledges 9 percent cap on hospital cost growth

President Carter seeks a Hospital Cost Containment Act to curb annual cost increases to about 9 percent, sparking opposition from the American Hospital Association which warns it could force service cuts and raise access issues for patients. The plan includes a $180 million expansion for child health care and would compel disclosure of charge schedules and cost data. Potter named new magistrate in Washington County

Thomas J. Potter an attorney from Wellman was named a two year judicial magistrate for Washington County effective July 1. Jane Zielstorf was re appointed to the other part time magistrate post. Potter will replace Avis Wells who resigns for personal reasons. The appointments come from the county Judicial Magistrate Appointment Commission chaired by District Judge Ira F. Morrison from 13 applicants for two 6500 dollar a year posts. Potter plans to move to Wellman joining Albion Young law firm. He holds a Carleton College and University of Iowa law degree. Other applicants named include Hope Speed Trevannion Jones Cynthia Hanshaw Bonnie Bannister Joyce Widmer and others.
