Keota Man George W Francis Dies at 45

Keota George W Francis 45 foreman on a Mar ine Co road crew Des Moines died suddenly this morning at his Keota home. He had worked yesterday and funeral services are pending at Powell Funeral Home. He was born December 6 1916 in Assumption Iowa and married Dolores Kollasch October 30 1947. He served in World War II with the Sea Bees and was a Catholic. Survivors include his wife nine children his mother five brothers and one sister.

Mrs Lenna Johnson Dies in Richland Home

Lenna Johnson 73 died Thursday night at 7 in Sigourney Laner Rest Home after nine months as a patient. Born near Richland in September 1888, she married Charles Johnson in 1922. he died in 1956. She lived on a farm north of Richland before moving to the city in 1948 and was a longtime member of Richland Methodist Church. Surviving are son Charles Edward of Birmingham and six grandchildren. Burial in Richland Friends Cemetery follows funeral Saturday at Gould Funeral Home led by Rev. Frederic Harris.

City Officials Urge May Clean Up Drive

Washington city officials led by Mayor L. C. Willits call May the clean up month urging residents to place all trash in containers for city pickup. They warn unimproved premises will be cleaned by city crews on June 1 with costs charged to property owners.

Riverside May Keep School for One More Year

Riverside public high school will stay open for one more year according to Supt. Dale Strothman who cited a letter from the state board of public instruction. The school will be removed from the approved list on July 1, 1963, signaling the likely end of the Riverside high school after next year. Leftist Japanese Protest Bomb Tests at U.S. Embassy

In Tokyo about 2000 Zengakuren students protested the resumption of U.S. nuclear tests by marching on the U.S. embassy. Demonstrators pelted walls with stones, staged a sitdown, and clashed with police before dispersing. A second day of demonstrations followed Christmas Island tests.

Contracts Let for Washington County Farm to Market Roads

Bids awarded Thursday in Ames for two Washington County farm to market road projects. Williams Construction Co. of Indianola won grading on both projects and Hanson Construction Co. of Washington won culvert work on both. Project one spans 2 1/2 miles south of Crawfordsville to Wyman with grading at 20274.11 dollars and culverts at 2958.28 dollars. Project two covers four miles west from Dublin to the county line with grading at 39332.50 dollars and culverts at 24108.74 dollars.Gasoline and diesel fuel bids opened, D X company the low bidder for a year of gasoline and Standard Oil for diesel.

Storm ends Iowa heat wave with quick cooldown

A fast moving storm swept across Iowa ending a brief heat spell. Temperatures dropped from summer like highs into the 50s to 60s with gusty north winds. Showers and thunderstorms spread from western and north central Iowa toward the east and southeast with cooler air lingering into Saturday.
