The Iowa State Teachers association will present a bill in the legislature next winter for a statewide retirement system for teachers. Secretary Charles F. Pye said a questionnaire has been sent to 25,000 teachers to gather data for the proposed pension law.
Clarence Olson, grocery manager in Spencer, was fined $50 by Justice Paul Brown for selling seed potatoes with blue tags that were not certified. The judge suspended the fine, citing Olson's belief that the tags conformed to regulations.
Maurice E. Farley and Everett Smith drop other work to pursue a case in Sioux City involving the theft of six three-cent stamps from D. H. Terry. The stamps were kept in a pocket container in Terry’s room.
About 200 Pella residents in Dutch attire marched from downtown to the statehouse to invite Governor Herring to Tulip Time May 12 to 16. The parade drew many onlookers as they urged attendance and celebration during the event.
Dubuque County Attorney John Duffy weighed murder or manslaughter charges against Donald Wennett after he confessed to killing 58 year old farm hand Mike Carbine during a dispute over paying a taxi fare following a tour of beer taverns.
Arch Breeding of Red Oak, saved from the gallows when Governor Herring commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment. He wiped tears of happiness, then went to work unloading farm machinery at the state penitentiary Fort Madison after his sentence to die on Monday was commuted.
Sioux City teen Leonard Avery earned high marks in the ninth annual high school art exhibition at Pitts-Surch Penn. His work was accepted for the 1936 international scholastic exhibit in the Carnegie Institute fine arts gallery. About 3,000 contestants from U S high schools entered. The exhibit also tours Chicago Art Institute Philadelphia and Washington.
Cedar Rapids Miss Louise Hagerman of Waterloo was elected second vice president of the Iowa Federation of Music Clubs. Mrs A C Mueller of Davenport was named recording secretary.
DES MOINES Discontinuance of the Home Owners Loan Corporation district offices at Fort Dodge was caused by lack of business. H H Van Evera town manager said.
The Rev. Adam W. Miller of Anderson Indiana and former Japanese missionary spoke as about 200 young people from Towa Churches of God opened a three day state meeting in Clinton.

Washington D C April 25 J Edgar Hoover head of the FBI said the Lindbergh kidnapping case is closed for the Justice Department. He noted they are not pursuing any Lindbergh ransom money and that the case is now closed as far as the department is concerned.
W. J. Darland, 48, a Clemons feed company employee, was found slumped in his car with a gunshot wound. He received hospital treatment and told police the wound was accidental and for personal safety reasons.
General Eleagar Lopez Contreras, acting head since the death of Juan Vicente Gomez, was elected president of Venezuela for seven years by a special congressional session.
Mrs. C. A. Speer will serve as Centennial historian and organizations chair for the county celebration. She prepares a Washington history sketch to be broadcast from Des Moines May 13 at 10 45. She will coordinate groups clubs lodges churches and patriots encouraging contributions and parade floats reflecting local history.
The first ward delegates to the county convention were chosen at a meeting last night in George Morrison's law office. Delegates include Mrs. L S Patterson Oscar Davis Roger Sherman J C Bauer and Mrs A C Dewey. Alternates are George Rudiger Alice Rownd John Squire Mrs Green Squire and Mrs Dick McCleery. Committee man is Dick McCleery and committee woman is Mrs B F Bostwick.
A Ford Model T owned by Maurice Beenblossom was stolen from a school area parking spot last night. It was found this morning in a field north of town owned by Ralph Livingston, with tires, wheels, and most detachable parts stripped, leaving the chassis. Deputy Stan Kelsey traces a lead in Brighton.
Former resident L D Langworthy of Syracuse New York died last Monday from pneumonia. He previously lived here with Mr and Mrs Langworthy and their son Frank and was manager of the Mills seed plant before returning to Syracuse where he was associated with Rose Hill.
The Iowa school for the blind in Vinton reported a fiscal year ending June 30, 1935, with plant and equipment up 70 273 dollars to 674 689. Improvements brought the total to 74 281 and depreciation trimmed the net increase. Cash declined 16 739 dollars, operating costs rose 6 289, and total expenditures reached 169 581 against 158 842 in revenue. A 21 223 dollar Public Works Administration grant aided the period while a 15 000 dollar state appropriation supported operations.
The John Goodwin home in east Wellman was partly destroyed by fire yesterday around 2:30 pm. Loss is about 650 dollars and largely covered by insurance. Household goods were removed. most items damaged will be insured. Also Rogert Duane Allen, son of Mr and Mrs William Allen, was taken to Iowa City hospital with meningitis.
The Iowa Nine year ends with finals at Burlington High. Washington High School entrants include Billy Cox Elizabeth Thorne and Charles Bear. Davenport Iowa City Muscatine Burlington compete. Davenport wins large plaque, Iowa City second, Burlington third, Washington fourth.
Dr. Paulena Nichell of the University of Hillness faculty has been appointed head of the home management department of the home economics division, succeeding Mrs. Fiorence Busse Smith who resigned. Announcement made April 24.
In Halifax Nova Scotia two men rescued from the Moose River gold mine after nearly 11 days showed gradual improvements. Charles Alfred Scadding and Dr D E Robertson arrived at the hospital yesterday. Robertson rested well and ate breakfast. Scadding responded to treatments and remained in satisfactory condition.
Stellarton dragermen honored by their own town after rescuing two men entombed in the Moose River gold mine. King Edward expresses admiration via cable from Halifax while Lord Tweedsmuir and local doctors praise the team. George Morrell recalls shaking Dr. Robertson’s hand as the last barrier fell.
Seven of eleven 1935 Superior schools return for the Iowa high school music festival in woodwind, stringed and brass events. Forty four qualifiers, two fewer than four years ago, compete next Thursday through Saturday with groups limited to six musicians. Named contestants include Lincoln Council Bluffs Mason City and East Sioux City among woodwind, string and brass divisions.

Teddy Schwartz won first place in class C violin solo at the Iowa Federation of Music Clubs state conference in Cedar Rapids. His sister Carol Schwartz placed third in class B piano solo. Dr and Mrs Schwartz attended the conference with their children, with sessions and concerts held Wednesday through Friday.

Miss Helen Marie Thompson of Williamsburg was elected principal of Lincoln grade school for the coming year by the school board. She succeeds Miss Isabelle Davis who plans to marry in June. Thompson is a four year graduate of the University of Iowa with an elementary principal certificate and five years of teaching experience including fourth and fifth grades and departmentalized arithmetic.
The Jubilee Singers from Rust College Holly Springs Mississippi will perform a concert at the Methodist church Friday May 8 at 7 30 p m as part of the National Music Week observance in Fort Worth. The group consists entirely of negro performers and will sing spirituals plantation melodies hemi classical popular comic and folk songs. The Fortnightly Club Music Department leads local events with more announcements to follow.
Los Angeles April 25. The district attorney recommended to Superior Judge Thomas L. Ambrose dismissal of three second degree murder charges against Busby Berkeley over deaths in a Santa Monica area auto crash last September. Two juries disagreed in earlier trials and the DA said further prosecutions would waste money. Judge Ambrose took the recommendation under advisement.
A large stadium area will host a flowering display as bushes burst into bloom around the arena. The plan envisions a vivid, colorful landscape transforming the surroundings into a scenic approach for spectators.
In Rome the seizure of the entire Lake Tana area in northwest Ethiopia was announced after a 125 mile drive by Italian troops. Italy claimed full control of the lake zone and Byrdo Giroges, junction of key routes to Addis Ababa, with local populations allegedly welcoming the advance.
Two Italian scout planes conducted a bold flyover of Addis Ababa, weaving through rifle fire. One aircraft passed within 100 feet of the radio station office while another skimmed 50 feet above the capitol. Both planes flew low over the imperial palace.
OSKALOOSA H IA Randolph Pyle president of William Penn college announced a concentration plan for next year. The year will be divided into three twelve week quarters with students enrolling in only two subjects per quarter to complete a year’s work in those subjects. Two other subjects will be studied in later quarters. Pyle said the plan eliminates studying by the clock and avoids examination week.
Leigh Soule and Lewis Warren spend the day in Des Moines attending a Y M C A meeting and related events. Both are noted for their active community involvement and outreach.
Knights of Columbus will hold an open house meeting Monday at 8 p m in the lodge hall. Special field representative Neil F McGowan and Ray Conley state secretary of Des Moines will attend along with leaders from Washington Richmond and East Pleasant Plain. A membership drive with Miss Helen Coffey directing vocal music outlines the program. K. N. Wilkins of Crawfordville a member of the Three Quarter Century club was born in a log cabin. His parents came to Iowa in 1844 in a covered wagon.
