A Friday luncheon and program will honor the top eighth grade scholastic achievers at the junior high. Forty nine students received invitations to attend at the Captain's Table at 12 30. The event is sponsored by the junior high parent and teachers group.
Four Iowa DECA students Gary Lewis Sheila Chabal Judy Te Bockhorst and Tony Mondia will travel to Chicago for the 16th annual National Leadership Conference of DECA. The conference runs April 26 to 28 with 650 leaders from 45 states expected.
Funeral services for Mrs. Odelia Walsh aged 92 will be held at St. Mary's Church Riverside with a rosary on Tuesday at the Sordon Adams Funeral Home Riverside. She died April 22 at Happy Haven Nursing Home near Lone Tree and is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Survivors include four daughters and five sons, plus 33 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren.

Ray Junior Collier a 20 year old rural Ainsworth resident died instantly Monday afternoon when his 1961 model car was struck by a Milwaukee Railroad freight train at a crossing four miles northeast of Haskins. Investigating officers and train engineer H D Frontress of Savanna La said Collier appeared to see the train and tried to stop leaving skid marks about 153 feet from impact. The crash occurred at 2 36 p m as Collier headed south on a county line road between Washington and Louisa Counties. Frontress said he set brakes and ducked below the windshield as the car appeared in the path of the engine. The train traveled about one length past the crossing before stopping. the car was pushed 115 ft 6 inches down the right of way. Details from the Hilton Coon farm near the hilltop crossing were reported.

Fourth through sixth grade boys will take swim tests Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. The Washington YMCA, with local schools, runs the tests for the annual free learn to swim campaign titled Drownproof Washington Community. After testing, parents will receive enrollment info for free classes starting at the Y in May. The program aims to teach self rescue in emergencies.
Izaak Walton members are urged to attend a meeting at 802 South Marion on Wednesday at 8 p.m. to plan the annual fish day for handicapped children set for May 11. Chicquaqua chapter members are asked to help at Lake Darling Beach Sunday at 1 p.m. to place docks for the summer season.
Iowa reported six new traffic fatalities and three farm accident deaths. Victims include Clinton girl Marsha Keister 8 who died after being struck by a truck driven by Ronald Fisher 24 of Clinton and John Deere test driver Robert Ohms 22 from Seales Mound Ul killed when a tractor overturned. Also Rev William Hoyle 69 Boone minister died in a tractor accident near Churdan and elderly couple Dingeman Verros 73 and Elizabeth Verros 62 killed in a Osakaloosa two car crash with Don Whigham 19 Ottumwa injured. The 1962 toll reached 155 with five highway deaths Monday.
Mrs Anna Marie Lukenbach 53 former Columbus Junction resident died Monday in Tucson Arizona. Body to be returned to Columbus Junction for burial with Duncan Funeral Home in charge though arrangements are in definite today. Survived by husband Lorain one daughter Phyllis Rickless of San Carlos California one son Max L of Monterey California two grandchildren mother Matilda Hendrickson of Columbus Junction and two brothers William of Columbus City Sherman of Keosauqua.
Morris Laverne Anderson, 53, died at his Phoenix home. Burial was at Mercer Memorial in Phoenix. He is survived by his wife Helen of Phoenix and his mother Mrs. Agnes Anderson of Washington. he was preceded in death by his father Gust and brother Harold.
Graveside rites for Martha Brindley Darbyshire will be held at 2 pm Saturday in Elm Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Jones Funeral Home Friday evening to pay their respects. Mrs. Darbyshire died Saturday at the home of a daughter in California.
