Maj. Gen. Courtney Whitney, MacArthur's personal adviser, said the general still has no idea why he was dismissed. He noted the March 24 statement was a military assessment used in psychological warfare, distributed to enemy forces and covered by media.

Six draftees and one enlistee departed from Washington at 10 40 a m by bus for Des Moines to be inducted into the armed forces. Draftees include Kenneth Joseph Wieland Riverside Robert Lee Marrek Washington Robert Joseph Lintz Kalona Howard Elmer Hardy Riverside Frederick Claude Troop Washington Elwyn Hugene Miller Wellman transfer from Millersburg due to family move. Paul Nelson of Washington is the enlistee.
Plenty of tickets remain for a farmer business men dinner at the Methodist church on May 3 at 7 pm. Sponsored by the Washington County Farm Bureau, farmers invite business men as guests. Principal speaker will be Roger Fileman, American Farm Bureau Federation secretary.
Short services for the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs LaVernon Helscher were held at 4 pm in St Marys Catholic church. The baby was born Saturday. Survivors include her parents and two sisters.
Washington high school seniors and five faculty advisors returned home Saturday after their annual trip to Chicago. Two buses were delayed two hours on the return trip by bad driving weather, but flood conditions along the Mississippi did not cause further delays. Students enjoyed views of the river from the bus.
Prospective members attend a men s dinner at Washington Golf and Country Club on Friday evening April 28. The 5 p m program includes an exhibition golf match by Jim Lloyd Clint Stewart Gene Tucker Bus Westermark Charles Wiele and T R Phillips followed by trick shots by club pro Wiele. TV and a golf film close the evening. all last year s men members are invited.
Battery A national guard unit stationed in Washington was called to fight floods along the Mississippi at 4 30 Sunday morning. Commanded by Capt Harold Stephens the unit left yesterday and headquarters were established in Wapello. Local guardsmen worked in the Port Louisa area today with four officers and 72 enlisted men in the contingent. Earlier, on Saturday morning, one half track and several enlisted men had been sent out from Washington.
Flood crest reaches 19.3 feet at Sabula as residents brace with sandbags. Levees face leaks but mayor Ulmer predicts they will hold. Rail routes rerouted through Cedar Rapids as Tri-Cities area experiences rising waters and bands of floodwaters advance toward Davenport, Muscatine, Clinton. Red Cross estimates thousands homeless in central Iowa and northern Illinois.
London April 28 Prime Minister Attlee faced a new crisis as Aneurin Bevan resigned as labor minister and Harold Wilson quit as President of the Board of Trade. Reports said further resignations could follow. Bevan cited the arms drive as a danger to social services and warned the western world faces risks from rearmament. The moves threaten a possible dissolution of Parliament and a general election with Churchill's Conservatives looking favored in polls.
Two cars suffered minor damage Sunday evening at 7 30 when they collided at the junction of highways 218 and 92 east of Ainsworth. Deputy Loren Robertson said the drivers did not see each other in time to avoid the crash. Raymond L Towns and Harold H Sehnicker were the drivers.
Charlotte Earls, a charter member of the YWCA Mixer club, discovers the local group is part of the Washington unit of Iowa District YWCA. She attends a summer conference and learns the YWCA’s broader world reach beyond crafts and sports.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mame Tracy Brock 78 will be Tuesday at 2 PM at Jones funeral home with Dr. C R Reed presiding. She died of heart trouble April 21 in Denver Colorado after two months illness. She was born June 30 1872 in Washington daughter of William E and Catherine Swift Tracy. She lived here most of her life and married Oscar L Brock who died in 1927. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Survivors include two daughters Alice Albright and Mildred Rosenbaum, 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery.
Washington county annual hobby show sponsored by the YMCA concluded Saturday night at nine. Exhibits were arranged in the YMCA gym attracting numerous visitors. Artemas Brown YMCA secretary urged exhibitors to pick up their entries at once.
Funeral services for Mrs Marion Wells were held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock at Jones funeral home with Rev Arthur Peters in charge. Pallbearers were Royal Robertson Raymond Gordon William Strum Andy Augustine James O'Loughlin. Burial was in Elm Grove cemetery.
Funeral services for Emma E Salterberg were held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock in the Jones funeral home with Rev. Milo Phillips in charge. Pallbearers were Ed Bovee, Tom Berdo, Golia and William Miller. Burial was in Eliarove cemetery.
Masons will convene at the temple Wednesday evening to continue work in the second degree. Local members invite eligible brethren to attend and participate in the ceremony and activities.
Keota mourns Elbert Kennedy longtime resident and retired farmer stockman and real estate dealer died Friday in Keota aged 87. Services conducted by Rev Hugh Williams at the Methodist church with Marsh funeral home in charge. Survivors include wife Belle Kennedy two daughters Mrs Tom Burton of Ottumwa and Mrs F A Gassett of Fremont Neb four sons Charles of Redding Cal Elbert of Kansas City Ted and Dexter of Des Moines two children preceded him in death.
Ursula Keane, German student at the State University of Iowa, urged YWCA support for German youth, recounting the absence of YWCA groups in Germany under Hitler. Aurora Samonte from the Philippines spoke on YWCA programs aiding Filipino women and displaced persons during National YWCA Week. The event featured a YWCA chorus and netted over 50 dollars for the World Fellowship fund.
Washington city officials warned residents to stop piling ashes junk and trash in streets and alleys. Street Commissioner Earl Little said blocked sewers create expensive city cleaning work and urged compliance with possible further steps to stop the practice.
UN forces in western Korea withdrew south of the Hantan river as a major Chinese counter-offensive struck along a 95 mile front. Vanguard forces of an estimated 700,000 communist troops pressed western central and east central sectors, forcing UN spearheads near Chorwon to fall back across the river.

Mrs. Julia Hayworth of Richland died at 2 30 o'clock Sunday morning after ten days in hospital. She would have been 86 years old soon and was the mother of Mrs. William Mohland of Washington.
Washington Kiwanis Club schedules a county wide junior fair auction in June at the Farm Bureau building. The sale raises funds for 4 H and FFA projects with donations from groups and individuals. All help is voluntary and no percentage is taken. the event aims to be one of the county’s largest fundraisers.
