No telephone impaired alarm, neighbors arrived late, and the Washington Farmers Mutual fire truck could not save the building. Most first floor contents were saved while upstairs contents were lost.

Webster City Man Injured After Tractor Wreck Sunday
Claude Balsley of Webster City Iowa escaped serious harm when his International 1944 model tractor overturned on highway 92 west of Washington about four o clock Sunday morning. He was pinned under the wreck for nearly an hour before a wrecker freed him. He suffered head injuries lacerations and bruises and was hospitalized for treatment. The tractor belonged to Western Transportation of Moline Illinois and the cause remains undetermined possibly sleep or glare from headlights.

Marines land on two Okinawa isles as battles rage
American forces reported heavy blows against Japan over the weekend. Marines landed on two islands off Okinawa while fighting near Naha continued with limited gains for the fourth day. Clothing Drive Continues for Overseas War Relief
The United National Clothing Drive for homeless victims of war continues this week in Washington county. The collection center, in a vacant store south of Lemmon Drug Store, will be open daily from nine to five with a rotating schedule led by local women’s groups. Friday’s and Saturday’s duties are assigned to the VFW Auxiliary and Legion Auxiliary, respectively, with all churches, schools, and service clubs participating and Washington receiving station remaining open to collect and sort contributions.
