United Press reports American forces have seized about three quarters of Okinawa and prepare the island as a base for the push toward Japan and the China coast. American bombers hit Hitachi plant near Tachikawa and Luzon operations press toward Baguio and Manila outskirts.
Wilson Brown of Tama Indian Co faces involuntary manslaughter and operating while intoxicated charges after a Sunday car crash killed Elsie Benson 29 and Edward Walker 11 and critically injured Tamia. Vernon Lasley 14 died later in Marshalltown hospital while Cpl Dixon Keuhnai on leave from North Catnap Tex.
Mt Pleasant will hold its annual School Achievement Day on April 26 sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. All Henry county pupils will be honored as Father Flanagan of Boys Town Nebraska speaks to parents teachers and the public at 2 p.m. from the park bandstand.
Sergeant Randall of the 4th Infantry Division, First Army, received the Bronze Star at William Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso Texas. He led a rifle squad of 12 men five miles behind enemy lines near St Lo using a compass to map a path through fortified German positions. The unit traveled two miles through a ravine then moved into unmanned territory, taking shelter behind a hedgerow for two hours.
Creston reports a prewar shoe dispute unresolved after an 18 hour jury deadlock. Eleven pairs valued at 234 dollars were allegedly ordered by a Creston firm and refused on delivery. The case began in 1941 and has reached the Illinois Supreme Court, ordering a new trial in Union County. Shoes remain stored at a transportation company warehouse in Galesburg.
DES MOINES Iowa Gov Robert IL Blue vetoed a bill allowing boys 12 or older to work in bowling alleys 16 was current age limit. He warned it would reverse progress in child labor laws and could lead to openings in hotels cafes and other sites. He returned five other measures for changes.
Lt. James H. Dayton twenty five of Trenton New Jersey flight instructor at the naval air station Ottumwa was killed when his plane crashed a mile east of Startinsburg. Dayton had been at the base since September 1943 and was a Cornell graduate. He is survived by his mother Mrs Lola Dayton of Trenton. Aviation Cadet Douglas Lyle nineteen of Minneapolis injured in the crash was taken to the naval station hospital in fair condition.
Des Moines reports flood waters receding across west central Iowa after heavy rains. Denison highway officials say all area roads are open and North Western railroad traffic resumes as flood risks ease. Bridges near Boyer River risked failure and basements flooded with roadbed damage. Odebolt recorded 5.55 inches of rain and the region saw 3.9 inches elsewhere.
Allied forces breached outer Bavarian defenses and pressed toward Regensburg as Lt. Gen. George S Patton's 3rd Army spearheads reached the Danube near Regensburg Ratisbon eight miles west of the city. Delays and preparations were reported as German forces readied barricades and anti aircraft guns for a defense along the river and inside Regensburg.
American 6th Army pressed toward Laspezia in northern Italy as German forces retreated. Italian radio claimed the city was flanked from east and northeast with encirclement imminent. Simultaneously 8th Army clashed near Ferrara while Po River lines widened under tight security.
The board of supervisors approves a comprehensive road oiling project. It includes at least six miles of resurfaced roads with asphalt and rock chips, plus gravel topdress. Niea ards construction of Washington will furnish and apply materials in a contract near 1,000,000 dollars.

Washington county Red Cross reports the release as the first POW freed after Allied advance into Germany. Health welfare follow up is requested, with communication restricted until new address is provided.
William J. Brickley of Suffolk County testified he examined over 100000 persons since starting practice in 1907 about 10000 after death. He spoke during a murder trial held in Boston referencing his long career and experience.
Rev Walter A Smith of West Liberty will join the Washington Methodist Church as pastoral assistant likely by early June. He and his wife and daughter will live with Mrs Quilthi at North Second Avenue. Smith has held multiple pastorates and is known in Washington communities as the church grows beyond lay leadership. In London, Russian siege forces drive toward Berlin with banners at Potsdamer Platz and strategic links forming between Soviet and American units as Elbe contact nears.
Lieutenant Rex E. Hazen of Washington Iowa received the Silver Star for gallantry in action in Hilborf Germany. The award was presented by Major General James M. Gavin aboard the 82d Airborne Division staff. Hazen served as artillery forward observer with the 376th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion attached to the 504th Parachute Infantry. He aided the crossing of the Rhine and the capture of a town in Germany.
British and American reports describe German forces retreating as Berlin faces a major push. Allied air power and ground movements from the Elbe threaten the capital while Soviet officers anticipate crushing resistance north of Berlin and near Dresden within weeks. Western pushes aim to clear northern Germany and advance toward the southern redoubt, signaling the transition to mopping up Europe.
Marshal Henri Philippe Petain chief of state of the Vichy regime fled into Switzerland from Germany today. A Swiss government statement said he was granted permission to enter to answer treason charges and would await instructions for surrender in Paris. The 89 year old hero crossed the border at St Margrethen by Pine-Car Caravan after staying in Bregenz.
Jane Edmondson has been named valedictorian of the Brighton high school class of 1945 among 18 seniors. Joan Hagans is the salutatorian with a list of classmates including Roger Arnold Charles Crandall Jane Duckdson Letty Fry Betty Gowey and others. Lauderdale is in service. Junior-senior banquet was held at the K P hall with Pythian Sisters serving and a program titled The Last Round Up.
Fourteen stockholders of Jews Southern Utilities Co sue in Chicago circuit court seeking five million dollars in damages alleging fraudulent transactions with W C Langley Co and Bechtel Bechtel officers also named. They seek a complete accounting and an injunction restraining board members from disposing of company property while noting dividends arrears to preferred stockholders.
