Grimes students refuse to leave, with 100 grade school pupils joining 500 high school students in protest of the school board not rehiring football coach Andy Crawford. The sit in shows no signs of abatement as pupils occupy the Grimes School building.
Otumwa resident William Nye of Agency was injured when attacked by a bull. He grabbed the ring in the bull's nose to break free, suffering cuts and bruises with possible internal injuries. His dog and neighbor Mrs. Kate Hawkins helped fight off the animal.
Des Moines officials announced a $5,000 appropriation from the emergency fund to purchase land adjoining Rice Lake State Park in Winnebago and Worth counties. The grant is described as a reclamation project.
A would-be bank robber, unfamiliar with the building, cut a hole in the floor of W. H. Maloy’s office and pierced the ceiling of Mae Farmer’s fashion shop in Shenandoah aiming at City National Bank. Con Ryan, a state agent, leads the investigation.
In a national labor relations board consent election 1,188 employees favored United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers Local No. 1116, with 268 opposed, out of 1,458 ballots cast. Eligibility totaled 1,552 workers for a contract bargaining authority to replace an expiring agreement May 1.

United Automobile Workers members at General Motors Chevrolet and Buick plants vote to strike by wide margins. Buick plant shows 9,500 yes to 2,080 no while Chevrolet reports 6,500 yes and 2,095 no. overall 16,000 yes to 4,095 no. International sanction required before action.
Frank David Willard a 21 year old of Omaha was arrested by Sheriff H M Putnam and a federal officer on a parole violation charge. He had been convicted under the Dger act in Omaha for driving a stolen car across a state line and paroled. Federal officers learned he planned to come to Washington seeking illicit entry and notified the sheriff to locate him.
Chinese reports say half a million Chinese troops repelled a Japanese counterattack in southern Shantung and stopped the Japanese advance toward Suchow. The action reflects renewed fighting in the region as forces clash near Hankow.

Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes announces the annual spring tin can drive starting Tuesday. Residents with cans should place them in containers such as burlap bags, cartons, or boxes along alleys adjoining their property for pickup in the northern part of town.
Des Moines Dr. Thomas E Eyres Polk county health head warned residents about smallpox. He cited several cases around Prairie City and two cases reported in Polk county along the east border near Prairie City.

James A. McTee of near Trenton Iowa waived a preliminary hearing before Justice J F Bovee on a motor vehicle while intoxicated charge. He posted bonds and was released from jail with attorney T A Michels present. A blood test conducted at the Iowa City state laboratory supported the DWI charge.
In Carbon Indiana on April 23 bandits tried for the fifth time to rob the Carbon State Bank. They forced entry, wrecked a large concrete and steel vault, but could not open the safe.
A gang stole five paintings valued at about half a million dollars from Sir Edmund Davis's home near Centerbury England. The works attributed to Rembrandt Reynolds Van Dyke and Gainsborough were seized in a daring robbery described as unmatched since the Mona Lisa theft. No clues were found hours after discovery.
Orville Elder of the Washington Journal was named a master editor publisher at the Iowa Press association gathering in Des Moines. The 1938 meeting honored editors for character and influence, with Frank Luther Mott presenting plaques at the Hotel Fort Des Moines banquet.
The Red Jacket coal mine explosion near Hanger Virginia killed 41 miners. Twenty bodies were recovered by rescuers as 21 entombed workers were declared dead, with no hope of survivors. The Keen Mountain site shows extensive destruction including a blasted mountain top and leveled Rye mine buildings.
