The university announced Pr. Tate of San Juan Porto Rico as assistant extension service entomologist and Eilis Hicks of Lamont as assistant extension wildlife specialist at Iowa State College Tate replaces A D Worthington who moved to Glen Allen Mississippi.
Boone-Eli A. Murphy, 78, was critically injured at the depot when he became dizzy and fell beneath the fourth car of a Fort Dodge line freight train. His right foot was amputated at the hospital along with cuts bruises and shock. He remained conscious after the incident.
Ottumwa Safety Commissioner Harry E Swensen said he is preparing an FCC permit request to operate a city police radio transmitter. The city council will not accept bids on radio equipment until May 2 and final installation action will occur after that date.
Local officers search for a man described as of average height slim with a brown suit who slugged Miss Imaelle Thorp as she walked home. A two foot pine board was found near the scene and is believed to be the weapon. the girl suffered a head gash but screams drew help.
Floyd Johnson received a suspended six month jail term after arraignment before District Judge L Ik Kirkwood. He claimed he had been smoking marijuana and cigarettes and did not realize his actions when he took a car and drove it to Des Moines.
Red Oak Ralph L. Peterson seeks the Republican nomination for Montgomery County sheriff. He completed an 18 month crime detection course at the Institute of Applied Science in Chicago and was the only student in his class to pass the final examination with eight or fewer errors after classifying 500 fingerprints. Peterson’s father C K Peterson was sheriff for two terms.
Gilbert, 63, of Kilbourn, is in serious condition with head burns after a steam boiler exploded at his brother Clat’s farm. The blast hurled him about thirty feet during lumber sawing operations, throwing him three feet from his position.
West Union H. Ww. Noon says Karl Wood 27 of Chicago and Kenneth Welch 21 of Trenton Mo. signed statements implicating them in the kidnapping robbery of Dale Floyd a farmer near here.
Attorneys for four Cedar County supervisors suspended April 4 filed motions to strike most charges in their ouster petitions. Names listed include John P. Jensen West Liberty Pred G Daut Wilton Junction Louis Hansen Stanwood and G D Goldsmith Clarence. County Attorney Ray A Vorner alleged willful neglect and maladministration.
James A. McTee aged 53 living near Trenton in Tenry county is jailed on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Sheriff H M Putnam filed the charge after McTee was arrested on East Washington street for weaving and nearly hitting two cars. A justice court hearing was planned today with County Attorney Richard A Stewart representing the state.
Chicago police arrested a musician who came from California six months ago for attempting extortion. The arrest followed a reported demand for money from a local business associate.

Dr Lockyer the English preacher holding meetings at the Presbyterian church will be heard on station WMT Cedar Rapids Saturday at 6 30 AM now announced by Pastor Dr FE W Eastwood. A 2 30 PM service is set at the church. Yesterday he spoke to Parsons College students at Fairfield and delivered strong sermons during the meetings.

Harold G White brought a half grown grasshopper found on his farm three and a half miles east of town. A full grown specimen was reported yesterday. County Agent W J Roudabush says early poison bait can control the hoppers with minimal crop damage.
Sarah Marie Davis of Coe College was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi on March 28. The honor, limited to the top tenth of the senior class, marks a peak achievement for the Cosmos noted senior. Davis also earned the rose bowl for highest freshman average and was named to the scholastic groups of freshman tenth, sophomore honors, and junior scholastics.
