Maquoketa high school principal E A Guaip states he will not seek reelection due to ill health, informing the school board of his decision. The notice indicates a forthcoming leadership transition for the district.
Jefferson teachers rely on their wives to substitute when male staff are unavailable. Supt. W J Mounce’s illness and Mark Mc Lannan’s hospitalization left wives teaching their classes. Other faculty wives also performed substitute duties.
Des Moines report states Mrs Anna Hartsuck 87 enjoyed her first airplane flight from the municipal airport. After a 15 minute city view she alighted saying she enjoyed it and wants to go up again.
Grinnell resident Robert Rodell aged 24, a Liscomb school music teacher, died after a car mishap two miles north of Malcolm at the Highways 6 and 163 intersection. Kenneth Koehler, 24, a Liscomb insurance man, was severely injured. Eyewitnesses Charles Wilson and G bb Griffith, both of Malcolm, reported the accident.
Oskaloosa J. C. Staak and Bruno Pierce, operators of the Strand and Rivoli, will manage the Princess motion picture house. The Princess, long run by William Nagel who died last fall, is owned by Ek W Kerr of Council Bluffs.
Near 100 nature lovers joined Linn County’s hike series to Palisades State Park led by Dr. L R Wilson of Coe College and Dr. Neil Miner of Cornell College. The group studied local geology during the outing.
Hampton Robert Grover pleaded guilty before Judge Sherwood Clock to supplying liquor to a minor. He received a three month Franklin County jail sentence with execution suspended on good behavior and was paroled to Sheriff F C Schwieger.
Ralph Varnard went next door to fix Mrs Reinstein’s basement laundry stove. Seemingly fine, he inhaled gas and was treated by firefighters with oxygen. He regained alertness and walked home, claiming to be shaken but able.
Newton Forty three high school pupils were suspended and will be reinstated if they meet behavior conditions set by Superintendent C Berg. The suspensions followed class fights involving non students and minor accidents occurred during the incidents.
Onawa Iowa, Ray Maxwell of Turin found the body of Robert Lister Jr age 23 in the Maple River near town while rowing. Lister had been missing three weeks after duck hunting with his brother Don and another boy. he separated from the group and did not return.
Marshalltown police say a series of attacks on young women is solved with the arrest and confession of 17 year old John Todd who admits assaulting a 16 year old girl after threatening her with a knife. He waylaid her as she walked home from a movie and was committed to Eldora training school ten years ago.
Paris April 25 reports Kurt Schuchnig, Austria’s last chancellor, has disappeared. Unconfirmed sources say he is not at Deiders palace where he had been held in protective custody since Hitler’s March 12 annexation. An intensive probe failed to locate him.
Dr. Glenn Frank, author and liberal, says branding Roosevelt’s pump priming as sound will revitalize economic machinery. He contends the 1940 election will hinge on economic issues and urged Republicans to craft a scientific audit.
During closing exercises of the Baptist Bible school the nominating committee report was read by Miss Lucille Forgey and officers were elected. Top posts include Superintendent CC W Long and assistants Wayne Kendrick Dan Moriarity. The school runs twenty classes with thirty officers and teachers and plans to grow.
Arthur Louis Kern, 35, an employee of the All-American carnival, vanished after leaving a carnival car near M. L. Brown service station last Friday. Police report no motive, associates say he did not drink or use drugs, and he had a few dollars with him.
Iowa records show March fatalities total 39, up from 24 a year earlier, with 801 accidents that month. Pedestrian deaths fell from 31 to 23, while auto collision deaths rose from 29 to 35. three month totals reach 98 deaths and 2,535 accidents.
Ray C. Tracy announces a new Burlington Trailways schedule through Washington. Westbound departures shift to 8:57 AM and 8:57 PM, replacing 8:30 AM and 4:05 PM. Eastbound departures move to 6:45 PM and 7:58 PM, replacing 3:55 PM and 10:25 AM.
The Women's Field Army for the Control of Cancer urges donations within two weeks as April hosts the annual fund drive. Sioux City switchman Walter Nelson, 26, of the Omaha railroad, was killed here when a boxcar being shunted ran over him. He appeared to fall while stepping from the car’s path, the impact cutting him through the waist.
The treasury allotted six hundred dollars for a new roof and plumbing changes at the Washington Iowa post office. Bids will be opened locally by the postmaster, who will invite local contractors to propose and then forward bids to Washington for contract award.

Cars driven by J. L. Gier and Mrs. E. B. Hammer collide at the West Main Street Avenue D intersection Saturday evening. Nine year old Howard Gier suffers a head cut while riding with his parents. Both cars show damage.
Dr Lockyer headlines a Bible conference in the Presbyterian church with joint Moody Institute events. Two large congregations attended yesterday and a Methodist and Prairie Flower church joined in the evening. Services continue tonight tomorrow afternoon and evening under Dr Eastwood’s coordinating era. Everyone welcome. Tonight at 7:30.
Washington county voters have about two weeks to decide on candidacies for the Republican and Democratic tickets in the June 6 primary. Nomination papers must be signed by the required number and filed by May 7 to appear on the printed ballot. state offices require filings 40 days before the primary, with April 27 for state senate or state representative. Twelve men compete for two county supervisor seats, with six Republicans and two Democrats seeking the 1939 term and three Republicans plus one Democrat aiming for 1940. Other county posts see filings for auditor, treasurer, recorder, clerk of court, sheriff, county attorney, and coroner, though no Democrats have filed for those offices yet. Sheriff H. M. Putnam and J. A. Marsh (Democrat for supervisor) have filed nomination papers.
Ainsworth resident Evans arrived home from Walnut Illinois with a serious head injury after tripping on a guide wire at a filling station. In the party were Cloyce Keiper Claude Carson Bob Gebhardt Bryce Lord and Leewel Jolly who continued to Chicago while Evans returned home to rest. He operates the local Standard Oil station and is attended by Norbert Norris during his recovery.
President Roosevelt approves a 148393 WPA work relief project to provide free home aid to needy families across eastern Iowa. Davenport headquarters will supervise services including house work and child care for women incapacitated by health or confinement. Additional counties listed include Scott, Clinton, Washington, Black Hawk, Louisa, Linn, Jones, Jackson, and others.
Miss Hazel McCarty appointed by county board as registrar of vital statistics for Washington district succeeding Miss Edna Purvis who resigned after serving since Sept 20 1924. Six districts served include Washington city Dutch Creek Crawford Cedar Washington Franklin Jackson Marion Seventy six Highland Crawfordsville and West Chester with fees paid by physicians and funeral directors.

He criticizes a contractual 10 percent fee for Wesman as improper and questions why the current attorney general does not handle the six corporate license suits.
