Spain's Minister Polo resigns or is removed after an ultimatum is presented to him. he immediately asks for his passport, signaling a swift exit from office under political pressure.
President McKinley signed Cuban resolutions and issued an ultimatum to Spain giving until Saturday for a reply. Polo requested his passports. Spain vowed to continue fighting if no satisfactory response by midnight Saturday. Navy and army prepared for action as U S House applauds. Reports from Madrid and Iowa cities note national excitement.
Washington reports say Spain will be notified of U S demands as Cuba crisis plans proceed. The Cuban resolution and the ultimatum to Madrid are to be signed at once and delivered together, with a likely forty eight hour reply demanded. George Parsons Lathrop died yesterday at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. The writer and novelist was 60 years old and had lived in New York for several decades. He was born in Buffalo and published notable works including A Recluse and other poems.

Marshalltown Iowa April 20 Judge Obed Caswell of the district court issues an opinion likely to affect every saloon in Iowa If sustained by the supreme court it will add a new phase to the mulct law In the case State vs John Jowman and F W Gifford Anti-Saloon League sought injunctions for selling liquor to minors Caswell had ruled an injunction required proof beyond employees actions and signs posted the saloonists appeal to the supreme court remains.
A Kansas City and St. Louis mule traders alliance raises prices for army mules, reporting 25 percent increases and plans further hikes. 1,800 mules needed immediately. Costs show buyers paid less than $50 per head while prices reach $88.40 in Kansas City and $93 in St. Louis.
