Venezuelan President Crespo Killed in Battle
A Caracas dispatch reports President Joaquin Crespo of Venezuela was killed in battle against rebel leader Hernandez last Friday. Crespo, a half breed Indian and former army division commander, rose to power via Guzman Blanco and later claimed the presidency after revolts and imprisonment. He proclaimed himself dictator in 1894, ruling after a bloody struggle and capturing Caracas in 1805. Commander George I. F. Wilde leads the new ram Katahdin, with ambitions to command in case of war with Spain.
