Indianapolis April 21 James TB Curtis captain of the Indianapolis light artillery urged increasing the battery roster from 105 to 150 men after returning from Washington. The War Department said Indiana would be asked to furnish about 1700 volunteers for coast defense six gun battery. General Lew Wallace announced his withdrawal from the Senate race, saying he would rather be a soldier than a senator and could accept only major general or private soldier positions.
