Indianapolis April 21 James TB Curtis captain of the Indianapolis light artillery urged increasing the battery roster from 105 to 150 men after returning from Washington. The War Department said Indiana would be asked to furnish about 1700 volunteers for coast defense six gun battery. General Lew Wallace announced his withdrawal from the Senate race, saying he would rather be a soldier than a senator and could accept only major general or private soldier positions.
Eight year old Gladye Balcom daughter of a prominent Detroit dentist vanishes after leaving home for school. A carriage with two men matching her description was seen fleeing south from Monroe. Investigating detectives and her father suspect involvement by his ex wife. Balcom vows to recover his daughter.
The Indiana state council of the Ancient Order of Hibernians is in session in Fort Wayne with President O'Hara of Peru presiding. Seventy delegates are in attendance.
