Rev. Leland Grove of Laurens Iowa has been named pastor of the First Christian Church in Washington. He will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Rev. Charles Cowell and is expected to arrive to assume duties early this summer.
The newborn daughter of Crown Prince Akihito will forgo a crown as she will lose her imperial title upon marriage under Japan's postwar rule. Princess Michiko gave birth to a daughter at Tokyo's palace hospital, arriving about 18 days early and weighing just under five pounds.
The Navy moves a convoy including the battleship New Jersey to protect reconnaissance missions over the Sea of Japan as President Nixon warned that intelligence planes are no longer safe from attack. The Kitty Hawk and several destroyers join the effort while Pentagon details remain limited. a Navy EC121 was shot down by North Korea.

A two story frame home belonging to Mrs. Clara Stemm near Lone Tree Iowa was destroyed by a fire Friday evening. Authorities said a car knocked over a kerosene stove starting the blaze. Volunteers from Lone Tree Hills and West Liberty fought the fire. the woman was outside the house when firefighters arrived.
UPI reports that North Vietnamese commandos strapped explosives to their bodies and attacked a U.S. camp two miles south of the DMZ, about 100 attackers entering barriers during a three hour battle. Eleven U.S. soldiers died and 23 were wounded. Five attackers were found dead. In a separate engagement northwest of Saigon, 82 North Vietnamese were killed after a six hour battle as U.S. forces pursued a base camp in jungle. American casualties were seven dead and 28 wounded.
Egyptian and Israeli artillery exchange across the Suez Canal for the 12th day running. Egypt accuses Israeli tanks of firing on civilian cars near Port Said and Qantara, with artillery replies along the canal toward Ismailia. No casualties reported. In Cairo, Premier Rifai denies Hussein offered a new plan and says Israel seeks to undermine Arab unity.
Iowa forecast shows clear to partly cloudy conditions tonight and Sunday with warmer air in the northwest half. Lows settle from 35 to 40 degrees, Sunday highs reach the middle to upper 60s. Monday outlook calls for fair skies and little temperature change.

Four women perished and 24 were injured in a dramatic fire at the 12 story Brighton Towers in Atlantic City. Fire officials said the blaze began as a frying pan grease fire in a seventh floor apartment and quickly spread, gutting the seventh and eighth floors. Firefighters, including building superintendent James O’Hagan who was burned, battled the flames for about two hours amid drizzling rain as hundreds of responders fought the blaze.
