Louis Hemphler 43 Garnaville farmer was in serious condition after his left arm mangled in a wreck near Elmer Brandt farm. Hemphler waved from his car when a Guttenberg driver Alan Fisher sideswiped the vehicle.
The Sioux City Stockyards Co. sues Sioux City in district court for 80 000 claiming payment for a municipal golf course purchased 12 years ago. They allege a contract with Hawkeye Land Co and seek interest and taxes involved in the dispute.
Des Moines reports 175,448 Iowa farms enrolled in the 1939 AAA farm program after a canvass of 200,000 of the state’s roughly 230,000 farms. State chairman O D Klein notes 87.8 percent of farms canvassed are in the program and 24,373 producers have declined participation.
Des Moines hosts Danish royal affairs with Carl C. P. and Hansen attending the Iowa Danish Committee event. The guest formerly belonged to the Danish royal guard, linking to Crown Prince Frederik’s father.
Mrs. Anna Olney of Iowa City files a 7735 dollar damage suit against Rock Island railroad seeking damages for personal and physical injuries and future pain and mental anguish. She alleges the cow was in custody of railroad employees who were careless and negligent and allowed it to escape.
Cyril John O'Connor alias Hanley, 38, jailed in Sioux City for investigation of a land lord roomer racket. He is charged with cheating by false pretenses after contracts were found in his pockets. Arrest followed awoman's inquiry about "this new ideal."
Reliable sources claim M. L. Curtis publisher of the Knoxville Journal and a Republican has been offered the post of state liquor commissioner. Governor Wilson would not confirm the report. Andrew Stewart of Rockwell City, a Democrat, is slated to leave the commission July 1.
Indianola delegates to the central district Parent-Teacher Association conference report that youths want guidance not dogma. Myrtle Meyer Eldred of Des Moines and Dr. C. N. Burrows spoke on counseling and finding the right way of life.
Des Moines reports the legislature transfers the securities department from Secretary of State Earl G. Miller to the Insurance Commissioner. It also moves regulation of installment stock sales from State Auditor B. Akers. Earlier actions include removing the state highway patrol and moving automobile registration and dealers licensing to the new State Public Safety Department.
At the Leon Beatty post regular meeting the plan to save notices was adopted. Members present will receive a dollar at each meeting if drawn from paid up members with numbers on cards placed in a hat. If the drawn member is absent the prize goes to the next winner. The May meeting starts May 2.
In Des Moines Gov George A. Wilson and friends Mr and Mrs Joshua Norwood avoided a holdup late last night when the governor called on them after the incident.
Prime Minister Chamberlain told the House of Commons Britain is willing to include the Far East in the general anti aggression lineup. Labourite Arthur Henderson asked if China and other Far Eastern nations could be considered in any actions to resist aggression. Chamberlain answered Yes, Sir.
Dr. Paul Gageby of Barberton Ohio died at his home after influenza days earlier. An autopsy cited a brain tumor as the cause while he suffered severe pain and insomnia before his death. He was survived by his wife and two young children. parents Dr and Mrs Frank Gageby of Craston Pennsylvania attended services.
A resident was robbed in their home by an armed bandit wearing overalls. The suspect fled after taking twenty one dollars. No injuries reported and local police are investigating the incident.
Tokyo reports indicate Japan seeks an agreement with Germany and Italy to share airplanes and munitions and grant manufacturing privileges. The plan would replace earlier proposals for a full military alliance of the totalitarian powers against democracies. Officials refuse comment while government sources note Japan's aim to obtain planes from Italy and munitions from Germany with plant operation rights in Germany.
Col Charlies A Lindbergh reported for active service in April 1940, entering the War Department before nine oclock. He met with Major General Henry H Arnold, head of the Army Air Corps, as officials planned a possible press conference. He will tour air facilities and then file a confidential report to the War Department.
In Le Havre on April 19 police opened a probe into possible sabotage after the French liner Paris caught fire and sank after overturning in the harbor. Investigators seek the cause and any implicated persons.
X ray images were taken at the county hospital to assess injuries from a head on crash north of town involving Randall Neill of Washington and Ren J. Yoder of Kalona. Neill complained of chest pain with facial injuries but no serious chest trauma suspected. Yoder had a forehead puncture and a spine X ray to check for serious injury.
The $12,000,000 liner, boasting a roster of passengers and $460,000 worth of art for the New York World’s Fair, was to sail to-morrow for New York. Only one of ten art cases was lost as the other nine had not yet been loaded.
Congressman Thomas E K Martin of Iowa City, member of the House Military Affairs Committee, says he has little faith in any peace assurances Roosevelt seeks from Hitler and Mussolini. He cites Hitler and Mussolini breaking past pledges, including German annexations and Mussolini’s Ethiopian invasion, and fears pledges will be ineffectual without U.S. commitment to war.
Miss Velma Booth formerly of Washington Iowa spoke to the Y s Men's club detailing seven years in rural north central China with the Chinese Inland Missions. She sang native songs and answered questions noting mission work faces pressure where Japanese occupation reaches. The club planned a spring dance and to observe Mother's Day on May 10. Ted Brown reported a Big Broadcast profit just over 118 dollars and discussed repeating the event.
In Des Moines the house tabled the liquor by the drink bill 82 to 15 ending its chance this session. Republican H. F E Risse protested, calling the move undignified. Budget-conference talks followed as the house refused to concur in senate amendments and formed a conference committee.
About 150 Iowa State College students petitioned President Charles J. Friley to abandon plans for a military greeting to Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Ingrids Denmark. The royal couple are to review an honorary guard drawn from the student officers training corps Friday.
DES MOINES Iowa February unemployment compensation claims totaled $503 660 the largest monthly amount since the program began. The commission handled 8 526 initial claims, issued 93 991 benefit checks averaging 8 55 each.
