Fort Dodge authorities report the Rotary Kiwanis milk fund distributed 47 371 bottles of milk to school children last winter. The fund supported local pupils through designated milk deliveries coordinated by club officers.
Cedar Rapids highway workers removed tons of clay that covered the paving on Highway 30 four miles east of here after slides along a 500 foot stretch in a 25 foot cut. Spring rains and frost likely caused the slides, workers said.
The Presbyterian church is conducting an independent inquiry into the Rev. Claude D. Saunders of Auburn who is serving six years in Fort Madison prison for assault with intent to commit manslaughter. His wife accused him of choking her and threatening to kill and burn her body with gasoline.

Iowa City headlines the partial solar eclipse visible across Iowa tomorrow. University of Iowa astronomer Prof. C C Wylie notes eclipse percentages from six to forty in eastern to western regions. Moon shadow crosses the sun 9 04 to 11 21 a m in the west and 9 12 to 11 28 a m in the east with peak around 10 a m.
In Des Moines four women played bridge at Mrs. John Denison's home and each received 13 cards in one suit. Participants were Mrs. J. E. McCambridge with 12 spades, Mrs. R. B. McGregor with 13 hearts, Mrs. F. E. Olmstead with 13 clubs, and Mrs. W. A. Cordingley with 18 diamonds. McCambridge bid seven spades after the deal.
About 16 drivers for the Rieke Transfer Co of Burlington including workers in Washington Cedar Rapids and Chicago were on strike. The walkout followed union wage scale disputes and a driver discharge one union activity and other warnings. The firm says the discharged driver was for cause and wage scales have been met.
R B E Walker manager of the Cedar Rapids credit bureau will speak at the regular monthly Chamber of Commerce meeting. The 6 30 pm session at the Congress hotel will cover merchant credit problems and centennial celebration plans with committee reports. A large attendance is anticipated.
Snow swept northwestern Iowa disrupting Fort Dodge Humboldt and Pocahontas county routes. Five inches in Alta seven inches reported near Larn, Iowa Falls four, Pocahontas four, Carroll three and Ames two and a half. Roads to reopen later. colder temps, clearing western areas followed by warmer statewide afternoon.
Leslie M. Eicher of Washington is named as a member of the Iowa State Highway Commission for a four year term starting July 1, at an annual salary of 4000 dollars. He succeeds C. L. MacKinnon as Republican representative for the area and joins R. B. Laird and Randall Melson in new appointments, creating a Republican majority on the commission.
Four speakers from Ohio and Pennsylvania will address the Washington state Sunday school convention segment next week. The event attracts about 1,000 workers and runs April 26 to 28 with sessions at the Baptist and Christian churches and a focus on Christian education alcohol education adult work and devotional enrichment led by Dr. J Arthur Heck Dr C C McCaw Arthur R Bodner and Mrs Walter Hutton with local organizers.

Randall Neill 49 a Washington post office employee and Ben J Yoder 21 of Kalona were injured in a head on collision at 11 15 this morning on road No 1 north of town. Neill suffered chest bruises facial cuts while Yoder had a forehead injury. Both were treated initially by a physician then admitted to Washington county hospital.
Major EK W Brest and Captain William R Brawmer of the Christian Army of America were jailed fifteen days in Jackson county for soliciting without a permit. They registered under false associations at hotels in St Louis and Des Moines, wore uniforms like Salvationists, and collected 17 dollars in Maquoketa. They claimed plans to form a local corps and misrepresented affiliations before arrest and return to Maquoketa from De Witt.
Washington county American Legion plans a Thursday meeting April 26 at Brighton led by Brighton post commander Warren Morgan. Six posts in the county will host each other yearly with county commander Bill Brown presiding. district officers Ben Nichols and Fred Downton expected to attend. The meal features ham and eggs.
Scout Troop 32 held a regular meeting at United Presbyterian church choosing new patrols and officers. Scoutmaster Donald Orr led with Nick McCleery and Gordon Carstenson as assistants. Rich Vanerus is Senior Patrol Leader. Patrols Flying Eagle and Wolf list the names and ranks of their leaders and members. A contest between the patrols runs to the second week of July with the losing group supplying all materials for an overnight event.
A special safety meeting for Iowans is set for May 10 at the Fort Des Moines Hotel Des Moines. W Earl Hall announces the event will include the official acceptance of a National Safety Council plaque honoring Iowa for the best organized safety program among thirteen midwestern states in 1938. Gov George A Wilson and a National Safety Council official are invited.
The men's faculty club of Washington public schools held a discussion meeting last evening at the North Side Cafe with five guests Rich ard Stewart Lee Holland Theodore Bailey Dai Brindiey and Ralph Shannon taking turns for short talks. Each speech was followed by an informal discussion on the theme What the public schools have done for me and what they should do for the students now.
Flying Eagle patrol holds a meeting at George Mc Burney's home on Thursday at 7 50 PM. Next Tuesday troop 32 gathers at the Scout cabin west of town for tests and an entertainment segment later in the evening.
In Des Moines on April 18 the senate unanimously approved moving the motor vehicle department from the secretary of state to a new department of public safety. The bill abolishes the motor vehicle commissioner post and goes next to the house. Senate began consideration of the estate budget bill but recessed for lunch without action.
Promoters in Fort Dodge abandoned plans for a new distillery saying existing distilleries have too much aged whiskey ready for market, which would handicap a new plant.
Federal Housing Administration insured over 31 000 dollars in loans to county residents from 1934 to year start. Sixty five insured mortgages totaled 17 100 dollars about 85 percent of property value. 59 short term improvement loans averaging 2506 dollars extended three to five years. Extension approved to two more years to spur ownership employability fair rates and longer repayment.
