Journal writer earns honors at Iowa Press Women event

Sheilah Klapp of the Washington Evening Journal won four first places plus a second and a third at the Iowa Press Women convention in Cedar Rapids held April 16 17. Awards included feature story for Rough Road to Freedom and special articles on They Raise Their Children Alone She Teaches Kids to See With Their Hearts and The First Day.

Washington High Band Tour to Kansas City in April

The Washington High School Band directed by Robert Shepherd will tour starting Friday, April 22, with performances by the Concert and Jazz Bands. They perform at William Penn College Oskaloosa and Davis County High School Bloomfield, then proceed to Kansas City staying at Howard Johnson. In Worlds of Fun Friday, and Saturday the Concert Band competes at the Festival of Bands with 56 bands, and tours Truman Library, Arrowhead Stadium, Nelson Art Gallery, and Crown Center. They return Sunday night.

Y's Men to Meet Tuesday Night at 6 20 P M

Washington Y's Men will hold its regular meeting Tuesday in the YMCA Community Room. President Jerome Hoxton says tonight’s Olympic events at the Y caused some confusion but the Tuesday session will start at 6 20 p m and have no effect on the usual schedule.

Kindergarten Open House At Stewart School In April

An open house for next year's kindergarten students at Stewart School is scheduled for Wednesday April 20 from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Families may visit with parents at any time during the hour since no special program is planned.

Legislators to Meet at Iowa Frontier Cafe Event

The Washington Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee will host a meeting with State Senator Forrest Schwengels and State Representative Keith Dunton in the basement of Iowa Frontier Cafe on Saturday April 23 from 8 to 10 a.m. Afterward both legislators will be at the Chamber Office from 10 a.m. to noon to meet with individuals or groups about pending legislation.

Postal Service urged to end Saturday deliveries and go electronic

A federal commission urged ending six day mail, backing instant letters by satellite and wire, and pressing Congress for 625 million dollars to erase the operating deficit. It calls for private first class mail possibilities, expanded federal subsidies through 1985, and a shift to market based rates while the Postal Service enters electronic communications.

Tremendous blast rips five story bank building in Chattanooga

In Chattanooga Tennessee a massive basement vault explosion damaged a five story office building and bank vault area. Two transients in nearby building were slightly injured and a woman seen nearby before the blast was missing. Police said the cause was unknown and bomb experts offered no power estimate. Fire officials described widespread destruction and began inspecting the Sisken Building while pumping water to expose the vault area.

Blood donors sought for Washington drive by Jaycees leader

Washington Jaycees president Russ Williams asks residents to donate a pint for a blood drive next Monday. A Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center unit will be at United Presbyterian Church in Davenport from 2 to 8 p.m. April 25. Williams urges county residents to contact R S Distributing Co at 653 2796 to book an appointment and help fulfill the 100 pint goal for regional blood assurance.
