A squirrel wandered across a busy highway outside a safety crossing, causing a temporary traffic stop. Two men in a pickup truck waved the animal to safety, after which traffic resumed including a stopped semi trucks.
Bradley C. Haifley, 18, of West Chester received suspended jail terms and two years probation in Washington County District Court after pleading guilty to two counts of marijuana possession. Judge L.R. Carson halted six month jail terms on each count, placing Haifley under Court Services supervision. Also, Charles R. Vincent, 33, of Keota pleaded guilty to a first offense OMVAS charge and Carson set sentencing for April 29.
Robert Eugene Stutzman of route 1 Wellman was hospitalized after his cycle left the road and flew into a ditch south of Wellman. The 8:45 p.m. crash damaged the machine at about $500 and led to a charge of failure to maintain control. In a second incident 42 miles north of Ainsworth on Highway 218, Vern D Thomann’s tractor was rear ended by Michael Keith Brown. damage was estimated at $1,350.
United Press International reports a fatal weekend traffic crash in Iowa. Glenn W. Townsand, 23, of Unionville, died when his car left the road and hit a tree in Moravia, possibly at high speed. Passenger Jack R. Lathrop, 25, Moravia, was injured and hospitalized in Des Moines.
Iowa lawmakers push a bill requiring vaccination for all children entering elementary, secondary schools and licensed child care centers against measles, German measles, whooping cough, tetanus, polio and diphtheria with religious or medical exemptions. Supporters say it protects public health and prevents epidemics, while opponents warn against state overreach. The measure awaits Senate action amid debate on a conscience clause.
Torrential rain drenched Texas for a third straight day, pushing rivers over banks and closing roads. Up to six inches fell in places with no reported deaths or injuries, though flash flood warnings persisted. Weather officials warned of more heavy rain and warned residents to stay away from flooded areas.
At the Washington YWCA annual dinner meeting in the Community Room Friday evening, Lola Fiddelke Susan Loving Peggy Patrick Linda Peiffer Ursula Scheldrup Gerry Schmidt Linda Sturdevant and Ann Valenta were named to three year board terms, Myrtle Foster to a two year vacancy, and Jana Nieman to a one year post. Mary Mathiason was elected nominating chairperson. special recognition went to Beatty Neuhart Marion Schiebel and Mary Patt Balk for long service as swim instructors.
Vice President Mondale in Ames to kick off a 20 month re election drive for Sen. Dick Clark of Iowa. Mondale praised Clark on reform efforts and said Carter administration will seek advice from Clark. The event drew nearly 1000 attendees at Hilton Coliseum and Iowa State Center funding dinners as speculation swirls about Clark’s opponents.
Negotiators for McQuay Perfex Inc and International Molders Union Local 159 resumed contract talks Friday with a federal mediator in Cedar Rapids. After five weeks of strike affecting about 180 workers, both sides reported very productive discussions and plan further sessions Sunday and Monday to reach a settlement and cast ratification votes if a proposal emerges.
President Carter forfeits a Camp David weekend to finish a sweeping energy policy and reveal CIA sourced warnings on oil and gas reserves. He will deliver a televised address Monday and a follow up Wednesday before Congress outlining a gasoline tax, car levies, and other measures while reviewing about 30 water projects. Carter also aims to meet Soviet leader Brezhnev later this year and pushes a voluntary anti inflation program seeking a two percent pullback by 1979, with government leadership but no magic solutions.
HEW reports that whites now account for more than half of American families on welfare, the first time since 1967, with many recipients on Aid to Families with Dependent Children living in female-headed households. The study of 31,000 families in 1975 notes fewer children per family and a shift from large cities to smaller communities.
UPI reports the US charged Taras Shevchenko master Alexander Gupalov with violating the 200 mile limit and seeks to confiscate ship and 397 tons of fish.
