The Washington Municipal Band under Milburn McKay will begin the 1977 season with a first rehearsal Monday April 18 at 8 p.m. in the Washington Junior High School band room.
Municipal workers will clean streets around and within one block of the square in Washington tonight. Work starts about 10 p.m. Drivers should move vehicles from the area to allow progress. Vehicles left parked after midnight may receive tickets.
The Iowa Senate approved a bill allowing museums to display inoperable machineguns and bazookas as relics. The measure follows the Van Buren County controversy when federal agents seized World War I weapons from a county historical society and later returned them, prompting calls to clarify state law and ease regulatory requirements.
Zaire reports an air offensive in Shaba against rebels advancing toward Kolwezi a major copper mining town. Rebels claim a heavy defeat for Zairean forces near Kolwezi with prisoners taken as regional tensions rise with Morocco sending reinforcements.
President Carter unveiled a voluntary anti inflation program aiming to cut the rate by two points by year end 1979. He named AFL CIO chief George Meany and GE chairman Reginald Jones to coordinate efforts with advisers. He insisted there are no magic solutions and stressed jobs must not be sacrificed.
Iowa House education subcommittee halted mandatory school reorganization for 1977, delaying action until summer. Senators had sent a bill to require reorganization by 1982 for districts under 300 students. Subcommittee chair Patchett cited deadlock on reorganization and funding issues, while approving a broad education bill emphasizing voluntary reorganization with a 600 student minimum and a minimal competency test for high school graduation. FBI said no arrests were expected after the seizure of over $250,000 in cars and parts and about 125 guns at Williams Garage and Auto Parts. The search, conducted by 30+ officers, spanned several states with the raid aimed at an alleged auto theft ring centered in Chicago and Kansas City.
