Des Moines Acting State Motor Vehicle Commissioner Horace Tate said action is needed to stop truck drivers from using Iowa roads while sleep deprived. He blamed trucking firms paying for fast schedules for contributing to fatigue. He noted two recent Iowa highway crashes that could have been fatal due to exhausted drivers losing control.
Mrs Isable Davis wife of Edward R. Davis in Fort Madison prison under a three year sentence for the poor fund fraud handed over a check for 1546 dollars to County Attorney Maurice Rawlings. She said she repaid Coan's share as well to ensure her husband returned every penny.
District Judge John J. Halloran in Polk County court signed an injunction against nine beauty schools in nine cities. The ruling bars unlicensed practice of cosmetology by student operators and cites charges for beauty work performed by unlicensed students.
Des Moines reports Judge Ralph Powers enforcing a literal fine for an overcrowded store incident. Lucile Bourg admitted parking overtime and explained the delay in buying Easter egg dye. The judge levied a one dollar penalty in a brief municipal court session.
Slater Oley Nelson aged 93 past national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic died at the home of his daughter Mrs Anna Shortland after a February stroke and a relapse He served as national commander for one year starting September 1935 and was state commander in 1927
Audubon local guard first lieutenant Steve Potter discovers a foreign object in a stove coal chunk and halts the burn with a stick of dynamite. A coal dealer verifies the finding with the chunk as evidence.
Laurens ditch digger Laurens Glen Smith re covering from a living death after two tons of dirt fell into a nine foot trench. Co workers raised alarm and about twenty men dug him out. He escaped serious injuries and credited raising his arms to create an air passage.
West Union Buelah Blunt lives on a farm near here and has a hobby of collecting bells. Her 195 pieces include a farm dinner bell a Japanese fishmouth bell a Swiss bellcon bell a bell from a World War German dugout a Rasputin church bell from Murmansk Russia a Chinese handwrought camel bell a donkey bell from Pisa Italy and a horse bell from the Isle of Capri.

Keokuk officers dropped charges against Raymond Chalupa and Velda Duwa after they agreed to marry and provide a home for the 20 day old boy found near St. Joseph's hospital. They planned marriage with Rev. William Schmidt at St. Mary's church, after obtaining a license.
A newborn was born at Mercy hospital in Iowa City under an assumed name. Washington county officers traced hospital records across southeastern Iowa leading to the Kalona couple. A report to Keokuk officers about a Washington County car provided the crucial clue.
The report notes three failures on the written portion of driving license tests. Authorities reviewed the driving program and will adjust instructions to address the testing gaps identified.
The Young Democrats club met in Congressman Edward Bicher’s office. Charlee Hazlett was named chairman with Forest W. Johnson Cleo la Grady and John Walsh elected vice chairs. Alice White became secretary treasurer. Next meeting April 26 to select delegates for the Sioux City convention.
George A. Brown executive secretary of the Iowa High School Athletic Association announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for State superintendent of public instruction at the June 6 primary. He would pursue a statewide education program modeled after Roosevelt era reforms to gain more state aid for Iowa schools. Brown, a former high school superintendent and principal at Burlington, is a University of Chicago graduate.
Nine youths aged 7 to 23 from Washington County have gone to the Oakville CCC camp with one more to depart Monday. Names include Jack Swift, Lester Reighard, Harold Cole, Charlie Dawson, Vernon Hartzler, John Guthrie, Manuel McKune, Harvey Gosling, Harold Hesseltine, and Michael Delaney. Two more are enrolled and two more may be accepted. county welfare director Miss Helen Creswell notes Washington’s quota may rise from twelve to sixteen, with enrollment closing next Wednesday April 20.
Premier Daladier halted a nationwide metal and industrial workers strike affecting 158,000 workers. Sit down strikers evacuated 40 factories including the Renault plant, ending a disruption that threatened his economic program.
Sheriff M. Putnam investigated breaking of several windows at Rock Island station in Brighton last night. Similar damage occurred at the same depot in the previous fall.
Republican women of Washington county will gather in the G. A. R. room at the courthouse next Wednesday at 2 30 p m. T B Martin of Iowa City will be the main speaker for the afternoon with others to be heard. The public is invited.
United Presbyterian choir directed by Carolyn Hamilton presented The Crucifixion by John Stainer to a large audience. Out of town soloists Harold Reeves and Carl Melander delivered compelling solos and recitatives with rich choir harmony. Helen Harvey played organ and Mrs. Richard McCleery was pianist as Don Renblossom provided simple decorations.
Washington churches and ministers concluded a week of preparatory services for Easter. Evening meetings filled the Baptist church for four nights and a three hour Good Friday service was held in the Methodist church. Yesterday seven ministers spoke on Christ’s seven sayings on the cross. Easter Sunday will feature sermons on the resurrection and special Easter music by church choirs.
St James church schedules high mass at 7 a m with Faster mass and music. Veronica Adrian of Omaha will sing Panis Angelicus during offertory. Low mass with benediction set for 9 a m. Services led by Rev H J Corcoran. True Ore mass previously held yesterday from 12 to 3 p m conducted by Rev H J Corcoran.

Twenty eight boys joined the Y treasure hunt Friday afternoon across the city east south and west. Jack Shaw won first place with Kenneth Ward second Billy Freeman third and Dickie Peterson fourth. Judges were Gene Trask Howard Little Donald Kiesey Merle Booth BJ Perdock and Darwin Vacha. Fred Stewart donated prizes including knives flash lights towel tickets and ping pong balls. All finishers received candy bars.
