In Cedar Rapids two boys armed with slingshots fired at pedestrians two stories below. Police climbed a fire escape to reach them and they were turned over to juvenile authorities.
Seventy five dogs of all descriptions were paraded by children at Newton during the third annual spring vacation dog show sponsored by Roy A. Hrough local promoter.
Selected high school musicians will form an all state orchestra band and chorus at the University of Iowa this summer. Chosen by school superintendents they will train from June 20 to July 21 under nine Iowa instructors led by Professors Charles B. B. Righter and Herald Stark.
Chariton officials Dr Carl J Drake state entomologist and Dr T J Curran state secretary of agriculture unveiled a poison bait spreader at the grasshopper control meeting. The device is an endgate feeder mounted on a Ford rear axle and pulled by a vehicle. It can treat thirty to sixty acres per hour.
Des Moines reports Gov. Kraschel announces a new policy requiring new state employees to prove their worth before reaching maximum salaries. Previously new hires started at the same pay as predecessors. that practice will be abandoned.
University of Iowa researchers led by Norman C. Meier and Robert Lewinski compared five worker classes with nationwide opinion from the American Institute of Public Opinion. Clergymen proved the least able to gauge public views. businessmen showed the strongest projection, followed by skilled workers physicians and lawyers.
Des Moines reports revised regulations shorten isolation for smallpox to a fourteen day period. Health commissioner Dr. Walter L. Bierring stated emphasis now on vaccination and isolation of active cases and susceptible contacts.
Des Moines report shows average pay checks rose 0.5 percent in March over February as fewer employees moved payroll totals down 0.4 to 7 percent year over year. Employment fell 6.2 percent from March last year while payrolls dropped 7 percent.

Des Moines officials report Highway Patrol issued 2 654 summons ecards and 6 380 warning ecards for motor vehicle law violations in March. Chief John Hattery announced the figures.
In Mondamin Iowa more than 100 students held a sit down protest at a high school as part of a strike over the alleged removal of Superintendent Gordon Wolfe. About 150 pupils occupied the building while teachers were refused admittance and the school board remained silent on Wolfe’s status. A prior similar action occurred in Center Point earlier in the week as students demanded Wolfe’s reinstatement.
In Toko a main flood from the Sumida and nearby rivers inundated about 20,000 houses after heavy rains. Water sweeping through wide areas forces evacuations and damages homes and infrastructure.
In Downey California seven year old Jenny Moreno was stabbed and bludgeoned to death after being assaulted. Her nearly nude body was found hidden in weeds of a vacant lot near her home by her father John Moreno. Deputy sheriffs and police restrained suspect Charles A McLachlen a 55 year old house painter from a mob of neighbors.

Iowa shows a hiring and wage surge in 38 food and kindred products firms from 1935 to 1938. February employment rose from 10,069 in 1935 to 12,433 in 1938, with payroll totaling 205,345 dollars weekly in February 1938, up 20.8 percent from February 1937.

In Washington on April 15 INS reports varied comments from lawmakers on Roosevelt's spending plan. Rep Rayburn praised it for recovery, while Rep Snell warned the pump needs water, and Rep O'Connor urged restoring confidence with tax changes and less government intrusion. Senator Byrnes supported upgrading business with gold standard ideas. Senator Copeland called it an aid appeal and criticized past efforts. Senator Byrd opposed.
Des Moines reports the Iowa Board of Control proposing more than 9.7 million dollars over ten years for capital improvements at state institutions plus maintenance boosts. The plan seeks new hospitals, more staff, and higher per patient support with a target 1 dollar per patient daily maintenance and staffing ratios to 4.4 patients per worker, 150 patients per assistant, and eight per nurse.
Homer C Birney of the northeast reports the death of his brother Worthington H Birney in San Francisco on Wednesday. Survived by widow Cora R Birney two brothers Earl J Birney Cedar Rapids Iowa Homer C Birney and sister Anna Finney Washington. Body to be cremated in California and ashes sent here for interment.
Oley Nelson 93 former national G. A. R. commander and longtime sergeant at arms at the Iowa house of representatives was reported near death today in Slater Iowa. Mrs Will F. Jones of Cotter visited in Washington yesterday.

Mrs Arthur Pagitt of Centreville is visiting relatives in Washington this week. Mr and Mrs Pagitt arrived last Saturday for the visit and Mr Pagitt returned home on Sunday.
Mr and Mrs 8 R Majors arrive in Washington from Muscatine last week and reside at 723 South Fourth Avenue. He is a Golf enthusiast and connected with Smart and Parrish Implement Company. The Majors attend Church of Christ Scientist and bring a White Sox interest to town.
