The Iowa Senate approved a bill by 41 to 6 to prevent the state tax board from changing individual property values. It directs appeals from local boards to the district court instead of the state tax board. The Senate concurred with minor house amendments before sending the measure to the governor.
DES MOINES: Representative Fd Brown of Polk County raised a figurative white flag after a long session opposing nearly every new expenditure. He appeared before the House with a proposal for more money, but the chamber was not inclined to grant it.
Indianola reports Leo Clark, 38, was crushed to death between a tractor and a disc on his farm near New Virginia. Nearly 50 farmers helped remove the overturned tractor from Clark’s body. The tractor reared up and toppled backwards in the accident.
In Des Moines on April 15, Iowa lawmakers endured a odor during a debate over a closed season on skunks in four southern counties. A farmer, later claiming to have shot the skunk in his chicken coop, threw the animal on the state house steps. The skunk compelled a long search before being discarded in a junk heap by a janitor.

Stanley Seuferer of Des Moines, driver for Meadows Company, is held on charges of violating highway traffic rules and causing an accident on the Brighton road. Ottumwa mail carrier Ira McRethe claims the truck blocked his vehicle, sending him into a ditch and damaging his car. Seufery pleads not guilty, says he did not hear the warning horn, and plans to post bond for a later hearing. The incident occurred five miles southwest of town early this morning.
The Y will host a marble tournament for all boys starting at 9:00 A M with entrants from Gra-Y or Juniors. At 1:00 P M organizers will gather Gra-Y and Juniors for a treasure hunt. Saturday morning the swimming schedule begins for the spring season.

The board of supervisors and county engineer W B Rawn plan a program of secondary road work including bridging and graveling, to be submitted to township representatives for approval and then sent to the state highway commission. In Des Moines on April 15 Senator Ora Husted challenged Thomas Curran’s fitness to lead the agriculture department. Curran’s supporters replied and he promised full cooperation with any inquiry as Husted sought a salary cut for Homer Hush from four thousand to three thousand dollars annually.
State Tax Chairman Louis E. Roddewig announced the new use tax bill was published in two Iowa newspapers and becomes effective at midnight.
In Sidney Nebraska Blanche Adams, a waitress, tearfully admitted motherhood of a baby found buried in a sand pit yesterday. She said the infant was born April 4 and was dead when buried. officers said no criminal action was planned.

Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins called a conference of industrialists labor leaders and government and public representatives to discuss collective bargaining following the Supreme Court upholding the Wagner Act. The move angered the National Labor Relations Board which had not consulted the board about the procedure. Congress remained divided on the implications of the Wagner Act decisions with some predicting broader federal power over labor relations and possible push for wage and hour legislation.
In Detroit and Oshawa Canada the day saw violent clashes as 400 police ousted strikers from the Yale and Towne lock plant after a 40 minute battle. Seventy nine women and 41 men were arrested, bonded for 8500, and face contempt charges for defying a court order to evacuate the plant. In Oshawa 3700 workers criticized Premier Hepburn’s handling of the General Motors strike and called for a shift away from his policies.

Lydia Catherine Tucker 84, widow of W M Tucker, died at 1 04 am at her daughter Mrs Frank Macon’s home on East Jefferson Street where she had lived since last August. Funeral Friday at 4 pm at L A Jones funeral home with Dr Arthur Atack presiding. Burial Elm Grove cemetery. She was born August 29 1852 in Indiana, lived much of her life in Washington County, married William Fishburn in 1875, later W M Tucker in 1887, two daughters survive. She also leaves two step children John Tucker and Nora Neff.
