Boone Iowa Chamber of Commerce members will be transformed into cooks and waiters on April 16 as they sponsor a smelt fry.
Creston reports the right corner stone for the Jefferson grade school building has arrived and will be laid with Joan Peterson in charge of ceremonies. The stone had been delayed when the wrong stone arrived last week, delaying the ceremony.
Davenport Mayor Merle Fr. Wells criticized a bill to establish police supervision in taverns and dance clubs. He warned it would degrade youth and appear like reform school, calling the proposal insulting to malehood and manhood.
The senior class memorial committee contributed 3000 dollars toward a statewide drive to raise 15000 dollars for a large hydro-therapy pool at the University of Iowa children's hospital. The gift will help enlarge the pool two to three times its current size from nine by 18 feet, which now serves four infantile paralysis patients.
Former Mayor Andrew Nordstrom served notice of intent to contest the mayoral result in Cherokee. Nordstrom claims ballots were illegally transferred from the third ward for a second count and that legal votes for him were discarded while illegal votes for McDonald were counted.
A man using the alias J. F. Hogan opened a City National loan account with 50, then paid for small purchases with checks that cleared. After depleting his bank funds to about 1, he cashed eight more checks worth 12 to 27.50, took merchandise and change, and left town.
Metlbourne school officials reset the 1937 high school by replacing the entire faculty after a student strike protested the suspension of Superintendent Je G. Kaltenbach.
Edwin Propst of Omaha found himself married to two women after his first wife’s Council Bluffs divorce decree was void for lack of legal residency. Propst must seek an annulment of his second marriage or Mrs Propst No. 1 must pursue a new divorce if desired.
Red Oak bowling workers at the Duck Pin alley halted operations in a sit down strike during the 9 P.M. shift. Pin setters demanded higher pay two cents per customer line and one cent per house line plus a penny raise per line and payment for alley cleaning now performed gratis.
Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon at Sherman’s funeral home under the direction of Pastor Arthur Atack. Burial followed at Elim Grove cemetery with casket bearers George Breitenbach C. C. Wilson Joe Link Howard McCleery Ralph Shannon and Manton Hebner.
Mr and Mrs Austin G Davie of Columbus Junction were in town this morning to shop. The brief note records their presence as local residents shopping during the morning hours.

Two deaths today raise 1937 automobile accident fatalities in Iowa to 114 on the 104th day of the year. Victims are Joseph Demules 51 of Des Moines president of the Midwest Bowling League died in hospital and Howard Greenbeck 8 of Davenport who died from injuries after being struck by a car driven by Howard Zuber 24.
Judge James P. Gaffney was expected to deny a motion for a new trial and set the hanging date for Walter H. Rhodes, 29, condemned for wife slaying by a jury that included seven women, in Iowa City.
Premier Mitchell Hepburn of Toronto demanded the resignations of Labor and Welfare Minister David Crowlel and Attorney General Arthur Noebnuck, both reported at odds with him in the CI dispute as of April 14.

Three young people from Washington were hospitalized with non fatal injuries after a crash on primary road No 2 five miles east of Columbus Junction. Driver Wilbur Havel lost control and the car left the road hitting a field fence and ending upside down.

Treasurer Marion George notes March 1937 collections exceeded 1936 by about 15 000 while January and February trended different year over year. Three month total stands above last year with total levies at 727 635 20 against 703 840 56 in 1936.
The Goshen College a capella chorus from Goshen Indiana will perform at Wayland High School on Saturday April 17 and at East Union Mennonite Church near Kalona on Sunday April 18. The congregation’s business affairs are largely in the hands of trustees named Stewart. Steve, Fred, and Cloyce Stewart sit on the board. Cloyce was re-elected, with Steve and Fred’s terms carried over. The three Stewarts are not related, representing separate family groups. Other trustees include Frank McFarlane, Dave Anwyl, and Neill Trotman.
Federal crop specialist Charles D. Reed says seeding of oats barley grasses and clover is progressing rapidly across western and northwest Iowa with little reason for worry about a two week late season. He notes 1922 and 1927 experiences show good yields despite late starts and cites late June and July temperatures as key factors. Plowing for corn shows good progress in western Iowa per the weekly weather and crop bulletin.
Washington D C April 14 A telegram to Governor Hugh White of Mississippi urged speedy punishment of the officers and mob involved in the lynching of two Black men yesterday. Chairman Sumners of Texas, head of the house judiciary committee, pressed the demand while opposing the Gavagan anti lynching bill now before the house.
Mrs. Carl Keck plans to reach Washington from Des Moines tomorrow. Her sister Mrs. Anne Burrell Terry is due to arrive from Palo Alto Friday.
Two new clerks begin work at Rukgabers Hardware this week. Gerald Howard, formerly with Rukgabers, and Leslie Hoatman of Ottumwa join after recent work at Fabrite Hardware. Howard left Rukgabers when they were still near the square. The Howards and Hootmans will reside in local apartments.
Davenport mayor Merle F Wells described the city as one of the wettest in Iowa and defended its lax policy. He said customers can obtain Scotch and soda from state stores without police intervention if purchased there.
Reese D. Truster of Port Byron Illinois and Lovelle R. Saklin of Richmond obtained a marriage license at Washington County Courthouse yesterday.
A brief trip takes Mrs Terry from Alto, California to Washington for two weeks with relatives and friends, then she plans to travel to New Jersey to visit her daughter.
Vinton April 14. Red Leninger 62 of Belle was indicted in the death at a county home. The case involves alleged foul play at the facility and charges are pending.
Paine Iowa in Benton county home inmate indicted for manslaughter in the death of ward mate William Hamilton 75 last January. The case charges the inmate with the killing occurs at the state facility where the incident occurred in January. Authorities report the victim was 75 and the investigation followed the incident at the home.
Des Moines lawmakers pass an 13 087 044 annual appropriation for the two year period starting July 1, permitting only 48 476 in increases. The bill trims Governor Kraschel's recommended budget by 1 161 688 and keeps expenditures near current levels. Four members opposed the bill Christoffersen Hickenlooper Gardner Irwin.
J. N. Nickerson and G. W. Ward open a new fish market three doors north of the northeast corner of the square. Ward will run the shop with Nickerson often on the road to supply fresh daily catches from local Mississippi River and ocean fish.
Detroit police opened an inquiry after Irma Duncan, 27, described scars and two burns on her body as acts of self torture claimed to be personal safety rituals to expiate her sins. The case centers on a self inflicted torture cult and possible related injuries.
Justice of the Peace W. Eldridge this morning sentenced Tobe Guthrie to six days in the county jail after he pled guilty to a charge of being intoxicated.
