Berkeley campus faces a peaceful squat in a playful annual cow milking contest between Doug Turner vice president of Berkeley student government and Steve Woodside president from Davis campus. The event unfolds amid campus drama and student participation.
A line of at least a dozen tornadoes swept through Mississippi injuring at least 12 people and causing heavy damage on main streets. Reports cited a heart attack, several minor injuries, and house demolitions with hail up to golf ball size. Rain and thunderstorms stretched across 17 states from the Gulf Coast to the lower Midwest with Beaumont Mississippi recording 8.19 inches of rain.
Iowa Senate rejects motion to reopen debate on allowing parochial and private school students to ride public school buses. Gov. Ray voiced disappointment as the 26 to 17 tabled action ends the proposal for this year and likely next. Sen. Klein urged Medicaid reforms, citing ineligible recipients and 10 regional offices planned by the Social Services Department.
President Nixon sent an informal State of the Union preview to Congress outlining 10 priority proposals. These include higher Social Security benefits, federal revenue sharing with states and localities, anti crime and narcotics measures, equal employment efforts, a tax reform plan, and improvements to Post Office, DC home rule, labor programs, and transportation. The message marks his first broad domestic program rollout this session.

In Washington, a Rotary Exchange group from several countries gathered at Mr and Mrs Marion McAvoy’s home for a weekend meeting with participants from Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, including Pam Fletcher, Carol Lovell Shippey, Dana McAvoy, Melody Brooks, Carale Stroud, Barbara Wilkinson, Garth Cheyne, Murray Cree, and Michael Burke, with Tom Essex greeting them.
Space agency said Neil Armstrong a 38 year old civilian astronaut will be the first to set foot on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission. Commander Armstrong will step from the lunar lander on July 20 with Buzz Aldrin following minutes later for a two hour forty minute stay.
Intercepted memo from President Nixon notes Armstrong as a veteran astronaut with a calm, decisive temperament. It details his Gemini 8 emergency landing, past trainer eject incident, and Apollo 11 launch plans on July 16 with Aldrin and Collins. Collins will orbit the Moon at 69 miles during the crew’s 22 hour stay.

W. Earl Hall, 72, longtime Mason City Globe-Gazette editor, died at a Mason City hospital after a sudden illness. He became managing editor in 1920 after leaving the Army and retired as editor-publisher in 1963. He won the Dr. C. C. Criss traffic safety award in 1957.
