In Chittenango a penny saver ad asks the owner of a misplaced pair of trousers to explain to her husband during the CES sale at Grange Hall on April 11 12. In Belgorod a trolley bus conductress is fired for entering the driver cabin and kissing her fiancé. Pravda supports reinstatement.
In Bilston England Sheila Dowling uses a magnet over her washing to pull metal particles from a nearby steel mill into her yard. She jokes the magnet may be the only fix before ironing. Eskdale England: a 1 1 draw leads to a river rescue as Chris Black jumps into a canoe to retrieve a ball. He misjudges the Esk and a mile later returns to a Liverton win.
U S Marines say 13 Communists were killed as they moved into the DMZ and allied forces struck 81 more enemy troops in six operations from the DMZ to the Mekong Delta. Communists hit 30 towns and bases, rockets and mortars fired at 45 targets, and B52 bombers dropped nearly a million pounds on base camps and depots northwest and east of Saigon. Four Americans died when a CH46 helicopter was shot down in Quang Nam Province eight miles north northwest of An Hoa. Marines were ordered to fire into the DMZ after spotting 20 enemy soldiers entering the buffer zone.
Nimbus 3 weather satellite liftoff at Vandenberg AFB was postponed after test equipment indicated a possible fuel leak in the Thorad Agena D rocket. NASA tentatively rescheduled to 2:53 a.m. EST Sunday, with a NASA meeting to decide on proceeding. The craft aims to map moisture, ozone, and temperature in the upper atmosphere.
Sister Joann Malone of Nerinx Hall in Webster Groves withdrew from classroom duties after parents pressed for her suspension following her arrest in Washington, D C, with eight others for invading Dow Chemical offices and destroying records. She will continue at Nerinx Hall in non teaching roles for the rest of the year and plans to leave the school at semester’s end. The school declined to suspend her.
Washington, UPI. NATO allies agreed negotiations with Warsaw Pact states would proceed cautiously and step by step. The communiqué noted talks must be well prepared and limited to issues suitable for fruitful negotiation and early resolution, with no broad East-West conference.
In Des Moines the Iowa Senate voted 26 to 17 to table a measure to allow parochial school students to ride public buses, killing the busing amendment and the safety standard bill for now. Gov. Ray backed the plan but prospects dimmed for revival this year or 1970. Senator Walsh condemned the move as anti non public schools and harmful to safety.
Doug Dunlap, a Washington teacher, will sign a half time assistant principal and half time junior high science teacher contract for 1969 70, leaving his roles as sophomore basketball coach and ninth grade football coach. The board also approved Denny Coon as elementary physical education director eighth grade football coach and assistant varsity wrestling coach. Coon is the son of local residents and is student teaching in Waterloo.
The Soviet Foreign Ministry proposed talks in Moscow with Red China to resolve the border clashes along the Ussuri River near Damansky Island. Tass reported the note urged resumption of 1964 Moscow Peking discussions and framed the meeting as a focused diplomatic move amid tensions and propaganda aims.
Rome reports that the government dispatched its deputy police chief to Battipaglia to review labor disorders that sparked nationwide unrest. Over 50,000 protesters marched in multiple cities against police actions, with 125 jailed and 38 injured in clashes in Rome Milan and Florence. Tear gas filled streets as cars were overturned and youths clashed with police. A three hour nationwide sympathy strike disrupted buses long distance calls and some factories.
Robert C. Choate 55 of 738 South Iowa Avenue died Friday night when he suffered a massive coronary while driving on South Iowa Avenue. His car veered, struck a utility pole, then stopped against a tree. he was dead before medical help arrived. He was active in the Y's Men's Club and Washington Manufacturing Co and had appeared in Y's Men’s plays. Funeral Monday at 4 p.m. at Marion Avenue United Presbyterian Church with Dr. Vernon G. Elgin officiating.
