Dear Aunt Agatha week in Washington fires and fund drive
In a Washington diary April 12 1968 the author notes a busy fire week with the Reliel house blaze leaving seven homeless and a dozen farm fires driven by wind. The Community Chest surpassed its goal of 35634 by 980, while Easter plans grow and a Ys Men chorus faces a near sellout with blackface concerns. A memorial response to Dr King’s assassination echoes through town.

Wind and plowing pace in farm report from April 13 1968
The farm column notes steady winds shaping spring field work. Fertilizer and soil treatments precede plowing while most small grains are planted. Focus shifts to discing and land fitting for corn, with field cultivators to curb erosion. Increasingly large tractors face soil compaction limits exposed by a monster corn combine’s wheel tracks last fall.
