Keokuk boy drowns during river swim attempt
Keokuk Iowa United Press International reports 14 year old David Sligh of Keokuk drowned Monday in the Mississippi River while swimming from an island toward the shore. The accident occurred in a public area where locals frequently swim. The boy was last seen near the island and his body was recovered by authorities later that day.

Fagen trial set for June 21 in Mahaska County

Jobless rate drops in Washington County in February
Washington County's unemployment rate eased to 4.5 percent in February from 4.7 percent in January, with 390 people jobless out of 8,740 in the labor force. Unadjusted figures exclude seasonal layoffs and reflect ongoing local plant strikes that may lift March totals. Appanoose County posted the highest rate at 10.9 percent.

Lockridge Man Hurt In Crash Near Brighton
Gerald Lee Hostetler of route 1 Lockridge escaped serious injuries when his car struck a bridge on highway No 1 north of Brighton at 3 45 am today. Deputy Sheriff Cliff Elmore arrived at 4 am after a motorist reported the crash by CB radio. Hostetler, who was southbound, apparently fell asleep and hit the bridge railing just north of the Izaak Walton clubhouse. He was taken to Washington County Hospital with a nose cut and minor injuries. vehicle damage was about $2000.

Washington officials say President Carter ordered a broad reopening of the federal crop insurance program for nine drought regions and launched an emergency drought credit program in 28 states. Welfare fraud case in Hawaii sentenced for six months
Lucille Jordan, 60, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of accepting welfare rent payments for non residents. She was sentenced Monday to six months in jail after admitting to cheating Hawaii of between 28 000 and 150 000 dollars from January 1974 to November 1975, with state attorney general officials noting the total.
