City police arrested four juveniles and two adults this morning for drinking beer in Sunset Park. The adults were named Robert Lynn and William Nicholson. The four youths were turned over to juvenile authorities.
Barry Don Fosdick said he reached to adjust his stereo when his car on West Madison Street Friday afternoon lost control. The vehicle struck signs and a light pole, pushing it through a home's window. Car damage estimated at 1050 dollars, total damage 1600 dollars. Fosdick charged with exceeding a reasonable speed.
The YWCA annual dinner is set for Friday April 15 at 6 30 p m in the YWCA community room. Miss Carol Dean will speak and a local trio will provide entertainment. Fran Vanderlinden presides over the business meeting voting on by law amendments and next year s Y Council nominees. Tickets are 3 with reservations due by Tuesday.
Washington firemen battled three grass fires sparked by high winds over the past days. Officials warned residents to take extreme care to prevent more fires as crews responded to incidents at a Charles Corpman site, the Clarence Zieglowsky farm, and the Karl Parcell farm.
A near capacity crowd filled the Community Center in Washington for the Easter Sunrise Service hosted by the Y's Men's Club. Richard H. McCleery wrote and narrated the program on the Five Doors of Easter with artwork and special music enhancing the event. Later, large worshippers attended area churches to complete the Holy Day as warm sun blessed the day.
A Sunday early morning blaze on the second floor of a Iowa Falls apartment left four relatives dead Kosta Bakas 31 his sons Jeff 12 and Steve 6 and a nephew Jessie 2. Neighbor found the fire at about 3 45 am and responders could not save them. Damages were estimated at 15000 dollars.
UPI reports the 275 foot Taras Shevchenko and its 93 crew were seized 240 miles southeast of Boston after illegal river herring were found. The Antanas Snechkus remains under crew control with possible seizure. officials inspect cargo and papers for civil or criminal action. Congressman Gerry Studds welcomed the port return.
Avis S. Wells of Washington says she will not seek re appointment as a part time magistrate when her term ends June 30. The notice to the Judicial Magistrate Appointing Commission cites family time and financial duties after her husband’s death in 1975. The commission meets April 25 to select two magistrates for two year terms through June 30, 1979. Applicants may file by April 22 at the clerk of court’s office.
Washington Jaycees staged their annual Easter Egg hunt in Sunset Park on Saturday morning with fun for all and prizes for many. Pre-school through sixth grade participants earned prizes, with listed winners by grade.
Workers in this year's membership campaign will meet Tuesday for informal coffee at the Richard Paul and Charles Rademaker homes to learn about the new season and collect materials. Renewal starts April 12 for current members. new memberships open April 22 with a dinner and run through April 30. Fifty-five workers will canvass Washington and nearby towns. The final concert of the season is Saturday April 30 featuring Lee Irwin, the famed Pops organist, with his own instrument.
National Guardsmen fought forest fires in Minnesota and Missouri amid warm gusty winds. Two fires exceeded 1,000 acres, one destroyed six houses. all fires later contained but not yet controlled. Elsewhere Florida rains ended a 31 day dry spell while Kentucky and nearby states posted record highs. Floods in southern West Virginia counties damaged thousands of homes and businesses.
