Washington YWCA Open House Spring Event

The Washington YWCA invites the public to an open house Sunday afternoon April 17 from 2 to 4 at the Y building. Displays include crafts and activities, plus a free baby sitting service and a free open swim. Refreshments will be served.

Williams elected president of Washington Jaycees

Russell Williams was elected president of the Washington Jaycees at a Tuesday meeting. Officers for the year include vice-presidents Charles Rochford and Dennis Day, treasurer Craig Arbuckle, and secretary Dennis Brayton. Directors named are Doug Richardson Len Kull Phil Busley and Charles Miller. Two regional candidates spoke briefly. The election will be April 24 at Fort Madison, with installation at the banquet program May 3.

Mini-Bus Announces Cedar Rapids and DC Charter Trip

The Mini-Bus plans a Friday trip to Cedar Rapids with stops at Eldercraft Shop Kirkwood Horticulture Dept and other sites. On April 22 the route includes Muscatine and Davenport. A June 4-12 Washington DC area charter visits the Capitol Arlington Cemetery Bureaus Fort Theater Smithsonian Williamsburg and Great Smoky Mountains. Reservations: 653-2853.

Firemen resign over site controversy in Burlington

Eighteen members of the West Burlington Volunteer Fire Department quit after the Burlington City Council declined to approve a site for a new fire station. Fire Chief Bob Elliott said five years of efforts to secure a location have failed. The firefighters will stay on for 30 days while officials seek an alternate site.

Weather forecast shows a cloudy pattern with showers and thunderstorms possible tonight and Thursday. Lows near mid 50s tonight, highs around mid 70s Thursday. Winds from the south to southeast at 10 to 15 mph. Rain chances near 40 percent tonight and 30 percent Thursday.

Des Moines Debate Sidetracks Iowa School Reorganization Measure

A proposed mandatory reorganization for Iowa small school districts was diverted to the Senate Ways and Means Committee after an amendment by Sen. Jack Nystrom would allow districts below the 300-student minimum to stay open with voter-approved taxes to offset state funding cuts. Proponents argued this local option could prevent forced consolidation, while opponents called it ineffectual and fiscally risky.

Await court ruling on water interest

The Iowa attorney general filed a suit against Altoona over delinquent water bill penalties, claiming the 10 percent charge exceeds state limits. The case, noted Tuesday, could affect Washington as similar penalties exist here. City officials offered no comment. a council discussion is planned next Monday.

Carter Eyes TV Address On Tough Energy Plan

President Carter may deliver a televised fireside chat to explain his tough energy conservation program. A 120 page energy plan will be unveiled before a joint session of Congress next Wednesday evening with 30 to 35 proposals focusing on reducing gasoline use and new taxes on gas guzzlers and producers.

Iowa House approves immunization bill for state children

The Iowa House passed a 77 to 6 immunization bill requiring measles mumps rubella whooping cough tetanus polio and diphtheria vaccines for students in elementary and secondary schools and licensed child care centers. Exemptions require a doctor's approval or religious grounds. A related measure strips the director of the mental health resources division of the DSS of psychiatrist qualifications. The effective date was set to January 1 1978.

Family Mother's Day concert at Fortnightly Club center

The Fortnightly Club Music Department sponsors a family concert on Mother's Day Sunday May 8 at the Community Center. Chief soloist Chuck Olson with wife Enid and daughters Renee and Andrea will perform a mixed program of popular, novelty, spirituals and standards. Tickets cost 2 for adults and 1 for students, with proceeds to the center. Ticket sale Friday April 15 1 5 pm at listed banks and stores in multiple towns. Chuck Olson, a Boone Iowa native now in Iowa City, is a Doctor of Music recording for Tempo Records.
