Two Iowa youths named to West Point appointments

Rep. Fred Schwengel announces Charles Edward Everett of Winfield and Lance A. McAllister of New London will enter West Point on July 6 with the class of 1976. Everett attends Wapello High School. McAllister attends New London High School. In Philadelphia a young builder killed his wife, son, and dog by running a car in a closed garage, with fumes entering the home through the heating system.

Army resumes hunt for D B Cooper in Woodland area

Woodland Washington UP I reports the Army continues to search for the hijacker known as D B Cooper who jumped from a plane last Thanksgiving Eve with 200000 dollars in ransom. The earlier search ended March 30 and authorities think he may have parachuted east of Woodland and did not survive.

Captain Freeman Finds Shrapnel in Gums After Vietnam Blast

JOPPA Md UPI Army Captain Carl Freeman sought dental care at Fort Lee Virginia base. Dentists discovered shrapnel in his gums instead of wisdom teeth. Freeman recalled a grenade explosion near a field artillery piece he manned in Vietnam two years prior.

Johnson suffers heart attack but shows recovery chance

In Charlottesville Virginia former President Lyndon B. Johnson was diagnosed with a heart attack after chest pains. Dr John Willis Hurst described the myocardial infarction as localized to the front of the heart and expressed a very good chance of recovery.

Washington High Choir Attends Area Festival in Oskaloosa

Washington High School choir members joined several area choirs at a festival in Oskaloosa on Thursday. Sixth graders Mike Beranek and Robert Boyd performed as David in Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. Three Children Die in Des Moines House Fire

In Des Moines a Friday explosion and blaze killed three children in a southeast side one story home. Eddie and Bill Boydston two year old twins and infant Donna Jean Boydston eight months perished. Fire chief Meredith Gooding said cause unknown though explosion suspected. The father, Edward Boydston, found one child Clarence three and escaped with him but could not save the others.
