Water tower rises in Wellman with new 150000 gallon tank

Wellman is unveiling a new 150000 gallon water storage tower funded by revenue bonds totaling 1150000. The project replaces the 35000 gallon tank built in 1911 as improvements to the water plant include an aerator iron filters and an electrical control system. Construction began December 15 and completion is targeted for late April with service starting May 1. Landscaping and interior finishing follow later.

Five Washington High students suspended for beer on school grounds

Five Washington High School boys each received three day suspensions after a faculty member allegedly caught them drinking beer on campus. Parents were notified by letter. The incident marks a rare disciplinary action at the school, with two similar cases occurring previously.

City invites bids for street and sewer projects in 8 p.m. read

Washington City Council will open bids at 8 p.m. on April 4 for ten blocks of street improvements including curb and gutter with chip seal, six blocks of concrete paving, storm and sanitary sewers. Portland cement paving covers West Fifth Street two blocks and Fourth Avenue four blocks, plus 22 foot wide slip formed sections and additional East Eleventh Street blocks. Remaining works include concrete curb and gutter with chip seal on several blocks. Officials say the surfacing is durable for lighter traffic and lowers local assessments. Good Samaritan Robbed On Highway Seeks Help

A 20 year old Washington man, Ken Mattison, said a stranded motorist robbed him on a highway shoulder between Muscatine and Blue Grass. He lost about $12, and he chose not to report the incident, saying it wasn’t worth the trouble. He warned others to avoid helping strangers in distress.

Fiddler on the Roof tickets selling fast at Y’s Men event

Washington High School held Issues Day with discussions on drug dependency by an Iowa City Veterans Hospital group, Planned Parenthood by Mrs Newel Bendickson, the Vietnam War by veteran Rich Vosika, prison life by four inmates, and transcendental meditation by a University of Iowa student. A Me Natalie screening drew a crowd while a hypnotism demonstration was canceled due to a presenter error. The program also included rock and roll history by Bodiene and a film on war All Quiet on the Western Front. Participation was described as g00 and may be repeated.

Senate Leaders to Visit China for Three Weeks in April

Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield and Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott will depart Washington on April 16 for a three week visit to the People's Republic of China. They will tour Shanghai and other cities, meet government officials, and visit schools hospitals farms and plants. The trip aims to build understanding and will include a report to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on return.

Travelers warned as cold weather hits eastern Iowa

Governor lauds Legislature for productive short session

Iowa Governor Robert D. Ray congratulated lawmakers as the short 75 day session closed praising 15 of his 25 point program plus other bills. He noted ten proposals were not adopted and pledged to seek their passage in the future. He highlighted major achievements in reform, environment, civil rights, and education while urging action on several omitted measures. The governor also credited legislators for ratifying an equal rights for women amendment and establishing a governor's commission on the status of women.

Washington County Coffee Day Sets New County Record

County chairman John Winga Jr reports a record 586.34 dollars raised in Washington County during the March 24 Coffee Day. Iowa Restaurant Association and Iowa Association for Retarded Children sponsored the event with restaurants donating coffee and facilities and drinkers contributing to the cause.
