Tonight’s 8 pm curtain at the high school auditorium with 77 seats left, and remaining seats 76 Tuesday 73 Wednesday 75 Thursday 26 Friday 25 Saturday. In separate police action two juvenile burglars caught in button factory offices.
Harold Minderman chair of the Iowa American Revolution Bi Centennial Commission will discuss Iowa participation in a world food exposition near Des Moines in 1976 as part of the bicentennial observance. A meeting for interested parties is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday April 12 in Winga's Café conference room and will adjourn at 10 a.m.
In Judge L R Carson's district court two 20 year old men, Rocky Lee Scott of Washington and Michael Martin Flynn of Keota, pleaded guilty to larceny over 20 dollars for stealing Nativity scene fixtures from Central Park last December. Each received a 30 day suspended jail term and parole to the county sheriff. A third man in the same incident, Harry Knott, previously received a one year suspended sentence. Earlier, Judge Carson fined 62 year old Howard Lee Fisher of Washington $300 and suspended his driver license for 120 days after a guilty finding for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
General Telephone Company of the Midwest asks the Iowa State Commerce Commission for higher local and miscellaneous rates totaling 1.764 million dollars annually across 114 Iowa exchanges including Grinnell Emmetsburg Manchester Nevada Tama Toledo and Creston.
Charles L. Goodell 58, longtime Montgomery Ward manager in Washington since 1961, died unexpectedly Saturday night April 8 1972 after hospital hospitalization. Funeral Tuesday at 10 30 a m United Methodist Church with graveside rites in Primghar Wednesday. Memorial fund is established at Sherman Eden Funeral Home. He was born January 22 1914 in Rutland Iowa and married Rowena M Brown in 1937. He served as Kiwanis Club president in Minot and led Montgomery Ward stores in several states before coming to Washington.
Due to the recent death of its president Charles Goodell the Retail Merchants Bureau of the Chamber of Commerce has canceled its 9:30 a.m. Tuesday meeting and a new date has not yet been set. Surviving family includes his wife a daughter Mrs Ray Balfour of Philadelphia and three sons Greg Gary Jeff, with siblings Erwin Maurine and Marjorie. He was active in the De Men s Club and directed several church and community choirs in multiple states.
The Washington Concert Association presents premier South American pianist Leslie Wright in the final 1971 72 season concert at the junior high school auditorium tomorrow at eight. Members attending as guests may use membership cards or receipts for admission. Wright will perform Mozart Brahms Chopin Mendelssohn, with a noted world touring history including 1972 engagements in Argentina Mexico Japan and Europe.
UPI reports U S B52 bombers guided by precision radar dumped tons of explosives on Vietnames supply zones near Vinh 145 miles north of the DMZ marking the deepest penetration and first strike north of the DMZ in four years. The assault followed SAM site eliminations and amid ongoing ground fighting around Quang Tri and Saigon.
James Francis Byrnes, longtime statesman and former Supreme Court justice, dies at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at age 92 in Columbia. Flags are at half staff and his body will lie in state at the statehouse rotunda for 24 hours before noon services Wednesday. President Nixon mourns his death and notes Byrnes held many federal and state positions with distinction. Maude Byrnes and his private nurse were at his side.
United Press International reports variable clouds tonight with a chance of scattered thundershowers southeast and extreme south. Lows range from the mid 30s in the north to about 50 in the south. Tuesday brings considerable cloudiness with highs from the upper 50s in the north to the lower 70s in the south.
A powerful earthquake struck southern Iran injuring and killing thousands as it leveled crude huts across a 250 mile area. Rescue teams worked to pull casualties from rubble while officials assessed vast destruction in Fars Province and nearby villages.
Federal agents recovered 499970 dollars from the Provo Utah residence of Richard Floyd McCoy Jr the BYU student accused in the United Airlines 727 hijack. Seized items included flight suits parachutes helmets a pistol two typewriters and a striped sport coat. McCoy faces air piracy and interference charges and was denied bail due to the crime's severity.
